Given the choice of the two where would you go?

Both theoretically the same car, one has better handling, one has four wheel drive, share same engine. Audi is cheaper to insure but heavier on fuel and tax, Golf is probably a bit cooler..

Anyway discuss..

Audi easily, not as many about, 4 wheel drive, although maybe not as good in the looks department, the 4 wheel drive would make it for me.

I would like the 4wd too for the all weather all ability but Golf is more of a driving machine apparently. Think i'll have a job finding the audi in condition and spec I want without breaking the budget or travelling a long way, while golfs are easy to find.

The Leon cupra R is a bit too lairy for my taste would prefer not to attract the attention of every saxo/policeman/oik with a key and nowt better to do in the land.

I'm looking about 10 ish, with a minimum of 30 mpg and would prefer forced induction, for that you can get either the Audi or the VW in good condition on an 06 with 40-60k on the clock.
But i'm open to suggestions as long as its suitable for biffing to and from work and not ridiculously flash.

Based on looks I would choose an Audi A3. I have absoloutly hated the Golf styling since the Mk3 1991, its so blaaaaand

The original Golf was designed by [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giorgetto_Giugiaro"]Giorgetto Giugiaro - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia@@AMEPARAM@@/wiki/File:Lotus_Esprit_06.jpg" class="image"><img alt="" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/22/Lotus_Esprit_06.jpg/220px-Lotus_Esprit_06.jpg"@@AMEPARAM@@commons/thumb/2/22/Lotus_Esprit_06.jpg/220px-Lotus_Esprit_06.jpg[/ame]

EIDT: spent to long typing my post ;)
New car / latest models I take it?

with that sort of budget and criteria, you've got plenty to choose from, for me it would have to be something diesel with big remap potential.

Yeah I was looking originally at getting a 2.0 TDI Quattro but everybody wants diesels because they are "cheap" which pushes demand and prices up, as far as I can see spec for spec and mileage for mileage a 170bhp TDI is 2.5 grand more than the petrol, works out at keeping it 3 years to break even provided I don't use the change to convert petrol car to LPG. Also the 2.0 petrol has healthy remap potential.

yeah fair enough, i did actually work out people who bought certain cars and went for diesel, actually LOST money doing average mileage, given the extra cost of buying the diesel etc.

you set on going german?

Dunno as ever when I post these i'm still thinking about and tbh been thinking on and off for a year, but now i've got a new job and i'm more financially stable i'm starting to look properly and have more of a solid idea of what I can and want to pay.

All I want is something like the swift has been for last 18 months i.e. it only goes to the garage for services no faffing on between them if at all possible but I want it to be fairly quick.

right gotcha, it's a tough one because you're criteria is very wide lol, lots of choice so i guess it's down to your personal preference, with £10k which was actually my budget before i decided the money was better off doing other things, i looked into; Mondeo STDCi, Astra sporthatch 150 CDTi > mapped to over 200BHP. and a BMW 330D coupe, but compared to the previous, it would be older and have many more miles on it.

i doubt the Mondeo is your thing but i really liked mine so i would deffinately consider another.

Curveball here - Hyundai coupe

Would easy get a nearly new one for 10k, theyve just stopped making it

2.0 with good remap potential, admittidly not as good of a performance as the other two but cheaper to run and in a lower insurance bracket

You would probably get a lot more toys as well plus a long time left of warranty, something a bit different as well, the reliability of these cars is also very impressive nowadays
