Edit: should probably say "bracket before gearbox", not "socket by gearbox" - look at the picture and you'll see.

Hi everyone,

I’m completely new to this forum but happily surprised by the constant activity here. My grandfather should not be driving anymore, still he has a year 2002 1,2 16 v Punto with which he is determined to keep the streets dangerous. However, right now he’s stranded and stuck in the second gear.

I went and had a look and saw that the gear shifter cable had popped out of its “socket” (my mother tongue is Swedish so I’m not completely sure about all technical terminology) by the gearbox. Right now its pitch black dark and below zero, but I still tried to fit it in there in the light of a flashlight, but could not figure out how it was supposed to in the socket.

Could anyone guide me in how t re-fit it? (If someone has a picture of how it’s supposed to look like I would be forever greatful) Am I missing some kind of clip? In that case; what’s the name of that spare part when I want to order the part?

Thank you in advance!

What you've higlighted in orange is a bracket that should be still attached to the gearbox

gearbox socket.JPG
Where i've highlighted in blue is a groove which the cable sits in
Now i think, there should be another clip to hold it in place

Anyway - there is a ball and socket joint that allows it to move the gear shifter

Bear with me - i'll rummage to see if i have any images of this said object to show you

Thank’s a lot for a quick reply! And yes, you’re right – I highlighted the bracket where I want the loose cable, highlighted in blue, to fit (and stay there).

I could see the groove but did not manage to push it down into the bracket, but it could be due to the fact that I was really freezing by then (I did not detach the cable at the end socket).

And like you hint, I also think there is supposed to be some kind of safety-clip there preventing it from popping right out again. …might do with a couple of plastic stripes temporary, if a manage to manoeuvre the cable into the bracket?

Okay i didnt have one
But i found a decent one that might help you with ye' olde google images

Sorry for double posting now, but if you look at the picture you just posted it seems like there is a square shaped clip there(?). If not, it's another type of bracket.

Yes there are 2 U shaped clips that are actually square in appearance

they often seize onto the clips
Never had one go crappy on me - but they can honestly be a pain to remove as they resist budging...

i think its no8 that you need in the picture provided at start

My advice? Find a scrappy, They will cost you a £1 in the UK i would have thought
