Technical anyone done a oil change yet?

any one done a oil change on the 2.0l Mjet? just want to know upfront how to get the bottom cover off and also where abouts the oil filter is and what colour it is to help locating it.. (usually there white could be black though)

think im going to change the oil to either some castrol Edge fully syn 5w40 for turbo diesel engines or maybe just the halfords 5w40 fully syn alot cheaper and meets the same standards.. that selenia oil is stupid price..

sorry i dont own a 2.0.

i have the 1.9, the oil filter has a bracket that holds it in place towards the bottom left of the block. there should be screws for the bottom cover.

i always use selenia wr 5w 40, saying that i get it virtually FREE

cheers i would use that as well if it was virtually free lol.

im guessing you mean at the back bottom left if you were looking towards the windscreen..

is it a nightmare to get off? (that bracket?)

I worked for FIAT so i get a few things free or discounted.

The bracket is quiet a task ( the fiat tech had trouble )

Yep if your standing in front of the car its to your left, towards the front of the block.
I need to do my air filter and that looks like a nightmare to change.

on the front of the block... wouldnt of expected that... ill have to have another look i cant see anything under the turbo that looks like an oil filter..

If you've got a DPF, it needs to match Selenia WR Pure Energy 5w-30, meeting ACEA C2 standard with low ash content.

If not, it will result in increased clogging of the particulate filter and quicker oil degradation.

You can't base oils purely on viscosity these days, there's a world of difference- hence the dearer price.

it tells you that on the website...

thats usually the reason why oil is changed in an engine due to it not having the same propperties any more after been heated to extreme temperatures then cooled repeatedly..

having a DPF is only going to make it worse as it contaminates the oil with Diesel.

So why do Fiat say 2 years or 18k? (21k on the 1.6)

to try keep the price of servicings down... thats why they relie on that light to come on when the oil has degraded... but it 100% says on the website that its life is around 10k miles.

i just think its a bit to long..

It tells you its good for 20k km which works out to 12,427.424 miles

My engine doesnt burn any oil not that i can tell at all and i do alot of miles every weekend... had the car less then a year and iv done nearly 20k miles.

it also doesnt say anything about it been good for ACEA C2 in the technical data..

so if someone can clear that up for me lol..

also that first link tells me that it is suitable for BMW WITH a DPF on the first two lines but then if you read down a bit it says its good for VW engines excluding DPF which doesnt make sense

so by the sounds of it the 0W30 oil is the best as it meets all the requirements and also is low sulphur and ash content for exhaust systems..

Easy really- because that article was written when Fiat JTD's were on 12k schedules. There's no mention of DPF's, or ACEA C2 standards because they weren't around.

Try the upto date version-

I can guarantee you it does burn oil- remove the inlet manifold pipe or the turbo-to-intercooler hose and you'll find oil in there from the breathers and whatever has slipped past the seals in the turbo.

Like I said, I wouldn't rely 100% on the Castrol site as it seems to be a muddle. Base it on what's stated in the specs on the can of oil itself.

It's better than any cheapo-budget crap, and the next best oil after WR Pure Energy, but is still not 100% suitable if you have a DPF. And anyway, Craig's got a 2.0 16v multijet.

What does your handbook say? Version that I can see says this-

mines a 08 1.9 16v 150... its say wr 5w/40 in the handbook

i worked for fiat and we used wr 5w 40 for all the 16v mjets.

can't remember the name of the oil for the t-jets.. selenia k/pro forma

mine doesnt have a DPF btw.

aye you probably will find oil in there.. just saying you cant tell its burnt any...in me handbook im sure it says 5w40 il have to check again!

iv been lookin for a up to date website for the selenia oil... im still not convinced that the oil will be fine for 18k miles with droplets of diesel in it as well, which i know is just a thin form of oil but its still mixing.

not when pretty much every other car is 10k miles oil change.. why dont they put this fantastic oil in all cars if it doesnt need changin til every 18k miles...i was advised as well by a "fiat speciailist" of the exact same thing that the oil degrades to the point its not really any good after 12k...

il try find out what the oil change period is on other cars with DPF's and see what they say.. since surely it would all be the same 18k e.g the insignia - same engine.

anyway i just need an alternative to selenia oil since its too expensive to do an oil change with and i think it needs doing especially when its up to 25k and pretty sure its not been done and if it has been done which is what they told me they told me they put 5w40 in so whats rite? just doesnt seem right and it'll be for piece of mind

The Insignia may have the same engine (but with less power output slightly) and its noisy as hell, I had one the other day as a hire car. Extremely noisy compared to the Bravo, I guess it has less sound proofing.

Yeah, Fiat keep tweaking the oil charts whenever a new product comes along- it's a pain to keep up. WR was the recommended oil, and is fine for non-DPF Diesels, but it has now been superseeded by Pure Energy, hence why Fiat now insist on it. It's the same with the petrols- Selenia K was introduced, then 6 months later they sent out a bulletin recommending Selenia K Pure Energy- making the large stock of 'normal K' we'd got in fairly pointless.

In a recent meeting with Technicians it was stressed that only the recommended oils should be used by Dealers, and warranty claims could be thrown-out if the wrong oil or grade is used (especially with the new MultiAir engines).
