General Any views on scrap value?

Hello,

Unfortunately, my 2001 Y reg Fiat Punto has just died. The oil sump had completely corroded (apparently a common problem?!) and as a result the engine has seized. Given the value of the car, I don't think its going to be worth me getting it fixed - the quotes for both a brand new engine and a second hand one were massive.

I'm now trying to work out how much the car may be worth as scrap - I've got no idea. Does any one have any suggestions? Aside from the lack of a working engine(!), the car is in pretty good shape for its age and has only done relatively low mileage of 47,000. Before I ring round scrap dealers, any ideas as to potential value would be appreciated.

darn! thats a shame- a 6 year old car being scrapped! sure you cant get a scrappy engine put in it?
maybe its where you live that determines what it costs for garages to do work on cars- i know that it would be worth your while to get a second hand engine put in , where i live.
are your quotes from just fiat dealerships? try independant garages.
also, up our way you can get upwards of £50 from a scrap car, collection free.

you should be able to pick up a used engine for under £200, and fitting for the same, what town you live in?

You could sell for spare/repair on ebay, someone may have an engine with a poor condition car.

Or break it yourself, or put in a new engine.

tbh scrapping would be the last option on my list.

i'm sure you'll get more money selling it as spares/repair. i could get a scrapyard engine and have it fitted for a total cost of £300 with a 3 month warranty. there will be plenty of traders who could do it for less and who'll want to fix it up for a profit. you'll easily get £150+ for it even on ebay. its worth £1800 when fixed so i'm sure you'll have plenty of interest. scrapping it would be silly.

and DONT SCRAP IT, punto engines are cheap and easy to swap around.

Thanks for all your views. I live in Wakefield and have got quotes from a Fiat dealership and an independent Fiat specialist garage in Leeds. The quotes vary from £2,200 (from Fiat dealership with a brand new engine) to £1,300 with a second hand engine. The independent garage couldn't beat them by much. I'm just wary of getting a second hand engine put in - I think I've just lost confidence in the car now and want to cut my losses before it becomes even more of a burden.

I've been offered £400 by the independent garage to just take it off my hands. Doesn't seem bad. I reckon if it was in good condition with a working engine it would prob be worth £1800 so that's close to the difference between £1800 and the cheapest quote I've had to have it fixed.

changing engine for my sporting cost £120, you dont need to go to fiat only places, try all the garages!

£1300?!!! £300 would be ok, but £1300 is a joke.

if you dont have faith in a scrapyard engine then you could fix it purely to sell and make some money back. if you ask about you will get a quote for much much less than £1300. most scrapyards will supply an engine directly to a garage for you, costing approx £150. a local independant garage will fit the engine for approx £150 and even dispose of the old engine for you. i've done this myself more than once, and i know many people who have also done it, and i've never heard of a quote any where near as much as £1300.

Anyone know if this is a common problem (its the first ive heard of it) cause i have the same year 2001 Y Reg sept with 98k and i wouldint like to loss my baby now shes still going strong! Its MOT is in April so if it passes without anything major wrong, should i be thinking on replacing the oil sump? far as i know its the orginal..

they often go, quite cheap and easy to fix really, but you will probably notice oil on the floor when it goes.
