Re: Barclays & Symantec discount scheme ~ 33% off
I have used Norton AV for 5 years or so, and for a £10 a year subscription fee I get all the latest updates, sometimes more than one a day. Suffice to say, I haven't ever been infected with a virus and it has caught a few. I use AVG on my sons machine, and for a piece of freeware, it's
very good.
The one thing to remember is that AV software alone will not protect you. You need a collection of programs to give you that ultimate protection. As well as AV, use a firewall, preferably hardware based, although software ones are very good, like Zone Alarm (which has a freeware version). You also need some spyware and adware checkers and cleaners, such as Ad-Aware and Spybot.
It is also recommended that you visit a site like Gibson's "Shields Up" at
http://www.grc.com/default.htm
This site runs a number of tests to determine how secure your internet connection is and then recommends solutions. They also produce mini programs like "Shoot The Messenger", "SocketLock" and "UnPnP", which turn off hidden access ports that can be exploited by hackers and viruses.
Common sense dictates two things when it comes to PC security.
1. Regularly update and check your PC for infections and security.
2. Steer clear of dodgy sites and emails. whatever protection you have will be useless if you visit dodgy warez or porn sites or you open up unsolicited emails from untrusted users. It's like opening your front door to a stranger an d letting them wander around your house.
Most people who slag of certain brands of security software do so because they think thay can do anything they like and remain behind this wall of protection when that simply isn't the case. Sensible usage of the net and computers is the best way.
