I use AVG free anti virus software. Anything is good as long as you get regular signature files.

All virus checkers are out of date as soon as a new virus comes out of date anyway just depends whether you can get the Sig file before the virus :) and they take up masive momory (norton).

I always like mcafee or sophos(spelling) they are the best 2 available but I wouldnt worry about it too much because if you do get infected there are always removal tools out there and fixes as long as you have another source of internet access.

Kaspersky antivirus has served me very well.
It may not have the glitzy look of norton and McAfee but they issue signature updates daily.
Very easy to configure.

Norton and McAfee have the benefit of writing up easy to follow disinfection routines.
Sophos I can't vouch for but I understand it is a respected product.

For an excellent firewall try Agnitum's Outpost 2.1
Again, very easy to configure and offers you as much control as you want.

Re: Barclays & Symantec discount scheme ~ 33% off

I have used Norton AV for 5 years or so, and for a £10 a year subscription fee I get all the latest updates, sometimes more than one a day. Suffice to say, I haven't ever been infected with a virus and it has caught a few. I use AVG on my sons machine, and for a piece of freeware, it's very good.

The one thing to remember is that AV software alone will not protect you. You need a collection of programs to give you that ultimate protection. As well as AV, use a firewall, preferably hardware based, although software ones are very good, like Zone Alarm (which has a freeware version). You also need some spyware and adware checkers and cleaners, such as Ad-Aware and Spybot.

It is also recommended that you visit a site like Gibson's "Shields Up" at

http://www.grc.com/default.htm

This site runs a number of tests to determine how secure your internet connection is and then recommends solutions. They also produce mini programs like "Shoot The Messenger", "SocketLock" and "UnPnP", which turn off hidden access ports that can be exploited by hackers and viruses.

Common sense dictates two things when it comes to PC security.

1. Regularly update and check your PC for infections and security.

2. Steer clear of dodgy sites and emails. whatever protection you have will be useless if you visit dodgy warez or porn sites or you open up unsolicited emails from untrusted users. It's like opening your front door to a stranger an d letting them wander around your house.

Most people who slag of certain brands of security software do so because they think thay can do anything they like and remain behind this wall of protection when that simply isn't the case. Sensible usage of the net and computers is the best way.

I'm not the only total security freak then... running lavasoft ad-aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, AVG Anti-Virus, Zonealarm, and a couple of wee utils from Steve Gibson at GRC..... It does slow the machine down a bit though, but thats the price we pay.... XP2600, 1Gb PC2700.

Re: Barclays & Symantec discount scheme ~ 33% off

Yup, it's the price you have to pay, although I've noticed my system become quicker since I got my router with hardware firewall. On it's own, with no other security, I get a "True Stealth" rating on Shields Up! ;) And it took no setting up, unlike ZA Pro, which I still think is the best software firewall out there ;) Plus the router gives all that protection across the whole of my network, no need for individual firewall programs on each PC anymore ;)

Re: Top banana

i would really suggest a adsl router with hardware firewall to anyone with broadband.
I can connect up to 4 computers to it and they are all hidden behind one ip address. (all these online tests show that every port on my computer is stealthed).

no crappy usb modems just a network cable and its on 24/7 no need to sign in as it does it all for you automatically.
no need to run a resource hogging software firewall just a good anti virus scanner. I use mcafee, much better than norton IMO.

someone mentioned Spybot!! i think spybot is total crap because of the lack of frequent updates and it detects next to nothing. I use windows washer and Spy Sweeper both from Webroot.com and they are both excellant with regualar sig file downloads.
