I have a problem with the air con compressor clutch which is causing burning of the clutch material.
Is it possible to fit a shorter belt to effectively do away with the air con compressor altogether.
The air con has never worked since i got the car so i'm not bothered at this stage about it working.
Would the non aircon belt fit? and would anybody have a part number.

Cheers
Ian

Right. If anybody has a problem with the air con compressor and does not want to bother with air con, it is possible to do away with it altogether.

The only thing you need to buy is a 6PK 1038 poly-v-belt which cost around £10 with vat.

The unit on mine was seizing up and the system was empty of gas anyway so i decided to remove as much of the air con gubbins as possible.

The heat exchanger in front of the radiator can be removed fairly easily without taking out the rad.
The pipework can be unbolted and disconnected right back to the bulkhead.

I then removed the compressor and mounting bracket and to do this you must first remove the poly-v-belt.

When everything has been removed you are ready to fit the new shorter belt, but before doing this remove the slash panel from the inner wing and then the idler pulley and spacer from the engine.
The idler pulley is no longer needed.

Fit the belt around the pulleys and leave the short loop to the front.
Use a 15mm socket on a longish bar to move tensioner down and push the belt over the front crank pulley.Release the tension and the belt is on.
