Hi guys, hope I'm doing this right.

i'm new and hoping you guys can help.

I've converted a 2.8 reg2000 Ducato maxi NHs transport ambulance into a motorhome, when tried to start engine after a weekend, no power, jump started and it ran got home and found there was only 11 volts across the battery, alternator charge light glowing red....

I'm assuming that the alternator is gone and needs replacing. wires seem to be connected.

I climbed under from front and can't reach alternator, neither can I reach it from crawling from back.

can someone please give me some advice on how to disconnect the alternator from my van please without paying for a garage...Ouch...

thanks i advance

check the earthstrap on the engine / gearbox
you can put a jump lead between the body and the engine to test too

clean and check alternator connections

check the main fuses on the battery

Unless you've got ramps suitable for the weight of your vehicle, this is going to be a garage job.

We had our alternator go last month, along with the battery.

You'll only get to the alternator from underneath, so you may need to pay for a garage.

Ours cost £378.00 for both Alt and battery.]

If you've got a high kerb, you could safely park two wheels up and chock the wheels, to give you more room to get underneath. I've done this to do basic checks on things, but wouldn't like to do a big job in this way.

Hi I replaced my alternator yesterday, jacked motor up put axel stand under for safety,it was messy and fidely but only took 45 mins, had cramp in my neck after but done it for free.

hi new to the forum, had battery charge light come on the other day on my motor home changed battery light still on, checked alternator 12v supply has none and no charge from alternator only 11.8 v just what battery has. I believe that the alternator won't charge unless it has 12v at D + connection . I have tried to download manuals for wiring diagram and position of earth straps but not happening for me can anyone help me this is doing my head in, ducato 2.8jtd 2004

Peter, i had exactly the same happen to my 2.8 jtd 03 , I replaced the alternator ( a pig of a job) and still no charge, I was about to take the new one off and throw it at the spares place, but a helpful and rather annoying mate came round took the lead off from the alternator and connected it straight to the + on the battery and it worked, what had happened was the fuse between the lead and battery terminal was snapped , cost about 3 quid to replace, ? didn't need a new alternator after all!!

Thanks will have a look, where is this fuse .Knew somebody out there would have had a fault like mine.
