Other threads e.g here have suggested wheel bolts between alloys and steels can be interchanged but I would like confirmation of this.

Bought set of winter tyres on 14" steel wheels (mytyres.co.uk) to replace the standard 15" alloys on 2012 500 Lounge TwinAir. Tried fitting steel wheels and the bolts from the alloys seem to have very long taper and this seems to protrude from the steel wheels holes quite a long way. Photos showing this are below. Do people steel bolts look the same? The holes on the steel wheels have little taper to hole but the alloys have quite a lot.

These do not look OK to my non technical eye. If they are not correct can somebody advise a reputable non dealer supplier and also advise what I should order (thread, length, taper etc..) ?

Thanks for time

Thanks form your photo they look similar same situation as mine as far as I can see. Is it OK if they protrude and did you feel they engaged enough thread? Only pictures I can find are for locking bolts - but of same type for same manufacturer and the look similar to me - comparison in photo.

The bolts are identical (at least as far as standard 15" alloys / 14" steelies are concerned). My 1.2 Lounge (fitted with 15" multispokes as standard) has been running most of its life on 14" steelies without issue & my 1.2 Panda (which runs on 13" steelies fitted with 155/80 tyres) uses the same bolts too.

One thing less for you to worry about :).

yup they are identical. I'd wager that the steel wheels don't need as much of the taper against the wheel as steel is harder than alloy sand doesn't need the force spreading over as big an area.

Thanks for the replies that reassure me that alloys and steel wheels use same bolts and long length of taper showing is not a problem, especially when people having been using it for long time. It just looked odd when I tried it but then you would need a shorter length bolt and also as the spare wheel is steel and there is not a different set of bolts are all a bit more confirmation. PS. Noticed in Honest John (Telegraph motoring) in his blog ( here )when ordering steel wheels and tyres for his 500 lounge ordered new set of bolts from Fiat and was surprised to see they were the same as the ones from his alloys despite Fiat telling him he needed different ones!

Honest John is a mail order bride ordering fool :) Stick with us :) I've run winter tyres for 3 winters now with no problems

they look a bit odd but had no issues running those bolts on my steelies last year
