All owners with paint flaking/peeling off please respond to this.

I am getting really pi55ed off with my dealer. My car is nearly 4 years old and is having the bumper sprayed for the 4th time next month. He says it is an isolated incident and has not heard of anybody else with this issue, so I want to take this up with Fiats, so please list you complaints...

The secret behind the re-painting

Dear Martin;

Sorry for your bumper-paint.
I don't have any paint probs with my 98'HGT yet !

But as I know re-painting is more difficult from the first painting. The secret is taking of all the ex-paint layers carefully,before re-spraying.

The problem is not related with your car/model or paint.

It's all about the dumb-painter...!

Just talk him over or search for another painter.

I have had brand new bumper not resprays.....

The guy who painted the last new bumper has explaind thing to me and has said that it was down to the special primer peeling off, not the paint he applied.
So Fiat refuse to fit a new bumper the paint shop have said that they are going to remove all the existing paint and primer then do the job properly as Fiats obviously can't

I think if I had paint issues it would probably be the car falling off the back of the perfect paint flakes!

In serious mode though, I had similar issues on my SX200 and i was down to the moulding seeping some bonding fuild that comes out as part of the curing process. The component needs to be chemically cleaned to ensure that this fluid is completely removed, but even then it can come back.

I have peeling paint.

The paint is peeling on the front bumper on my 97 Brava. Because my car is dark green it doesn't really show so i haven't done anything about it. If you get a good result maybe i'll take my car to whoever does yours.

the coating which covers the wing mirror stantions are degrading very rapidly

I have the same problem on my 98 Bravo but since the car is used I'm not really sure whether the bumper was factory painted or had a paint job later on. It seems only to be some kind of coating peeling off as the original color is preserved.

Paint flaking problem

The front bumper on my red TD100 is suffering from what appears to be a clear laquer flaking off.

I have the same problem as lorteungen with my red 97 brava, it seems like a laquer coming off (thought only metallic paint had a laquer).

The paint on my '99 Bravo peeled off the bumper within two years.

Also, the paint peeled off the wing-mirror mounts and the exposed aluminium has now oxidised into a nice white powdery finish - classy...

Luckily (?), I recently had a bump that ensured that a new bumper was fitted and sprayed on the insurance.

Flaky Paint

I've got this problem too with my 97 P 1.8 HLX. It started about two years ago when I first bought the car second hand. It looks as if lacquer is coming off of the rear spoiler and boot handle. The bumpers are ok although the front one had to replaced when I hit a Fiesta up the arse. still, if you're going to hit another car hit a crap one. I've not bothered doing anything about it as the car is red and the whole paint job is an abortion anyway. It's going pink and really the whole car needs a re spray, so that would be more than the cars worth. Don't bother asking the dealer if it's covered under the cosmetic warranty by the way, as they won't honour it as I found but what do you expect from Fiat third rate dealers? I'm going to Halfords when the weather gets warmer and will buy an industrial sized can of lacquer and bodge it as best I can I think.

Bloody Fiat paint

The paint on my 1997 Bravo has started peeling off on the front bumper and the back one. I got the garage where I bought it to re-paint the front one, but it not the best job. Also the paint on the wing mirrors! Oh and the alu. is showing up a nice white. Local Fiat specialist says the Alu. has always been a problem with the Alfa as well. Nice to know that its the whole company!!

Thats OK, the paint on my front bumper is fine, but the car is flaking off the back of the paint though!

Flaking door mirrors

Me too, Marea 20v R plate, both mirror stanchions bubbled & flaking. Sanded down & used black hammerite which makes them look better. Also had both door sills resprayed last year, paint had come off down to the bare metal.

I only had the car 2 months (bought used last October) before it started to peel. I didnt bother with the garage I bought it from as they're pretty useless on aftersales (Reg Vardy Darlington) so I got it done at a bodyshop round the corner from where I work. "Touch wood" its not happened again

I had my 2000 Brava serviced by a Fiat dealer last week and they pressure hosed the car removing some paint from top of front bumper - so they had to respray the entire bumper for free.

However I would be careful how you wash your cars......
