Some while back, our daughter brought her new baby around and we took them out in the car. The baby seat had to be fitted to the front passenger seat and she was aware that regs. said we had to have the airbag switched OFF. So we switched it off, but when we turned the key in the switch again, the lights wouldn't go off!

I've just got used to the lights being on all the time, but today the car's in for its MOT and I've just had a call from the garage to say that the car will fail because of this. They say they'll see if it's just a question of cancelling a 'false' fault signal by putting it on the system.

However, I'm sure I've read on here before that airbags are NOT part of the MOT. When you think about it, it's an accessory really. So, Airbags part of MOT or not?

I think dashboard warning lights are now a fail mate.

Is the car a 3 door? Does it have airbags in the seats?

My old seats had a loose cable and if they had been moved forwards to let someone in the back it would sometimes cause the airbag light to come on.

I would just have to give the cable a 'wiggle' and they would go off.

Just a suggestion!

Hi Charlieboy 13

Thanks for the response. Yes, the car's a 3-door, but I'm pretty sure there are no airbags in the seats (What purpose would they serve?).

I imagine they are for side impacts?

Puntos can be finicky little things when it comes to electrical faults. hopefully it will be a simple fix clearing the code on the code reader.

Speaking of which do you own a code reader?

A definite must for owning a fiat!

Most members will recommend multiecuscanner software for the laptop and suitable obd2 cables.

Alternatively you can get cheap scanners for about £15 on ebay (y)

But will these read air bag and steering faults and put all lights out or just engine management light??

Hi Ziggy and Multipete

Yes, turned airbag switch off and on again several times with ignition off and on, but no change. Also tried disconnecting battery for half an hour. However, the garage just cancelled the fault code and everything's OK now.

Well, I say everything's OK, just the mere expense of a new cat!! Still clear for another year, though I'm thinking of moving on to a new car in the next couple of months.

Anyway, thanks for your help and your interest.

Was it a Red or Yellow light?
Im going to assumer Red right now

Usually - its the blasted isolation switch Interference detected / implausable signal

its due to the earth return for it going resistive or something like that

I'd love to know where it does earth, as it'd probably just want a clean up and it'll be fine

But fiat had to make a repair kit because it was probably 10x Cheaper to re-earth it vs actually fixing it

Tbh its a decent fix - i did it on mine - WOULDNT ever go back tbh...

Ziggy
