Hi I have a Schumacer Sporting seicento MPI 51reg I have two problems the fan wont come on when it gets hot, I have checked all the usual places fuses relays etc, I know the fan is OK I have had to replace it, I have checked the voltage at the thermostat housing which had 4.9 volts, the temp high light comes on just before she boils over, I was told the ECU tells the fan to come on Via this temp sender in the therm housing, is that right? has anyone else had this problem. also whilst fiddling with all the wires and relays the airbag light has come on, I have tried taking the fuse out, but even then the light stays on, plus its due for test in the next couple of weeks, any ideas ??
Cheers Roger :confused::confused:

If the fan runs when you feed it 12v and an earth, then it is the fan's earth wiring, that is open circuit or a fuse burnt or the relay kaput...

The wiring is a pig.

Run the heater fan with the heater on all the time until you get the radiator fan to switch on reliable or you will be skimming head as well. Dont worry about cooking alive. Think about the band aid on knuckles...

Bleed the coolant cold if it boils and geasers.

Oh the air bag

The air bag light is probably controlled by the ECU, it wont go off until the air bag is ok.

You may need to clean the contacts of the relays and fuses - you have been removing, with a soft rag and meths, I use cotton buds. Then replace carefully.

Treat the blades like they were optics and the relays like eggs.

If that does not work I'd try smearing some copper slip on a rag and wiping the blades of the fises and relays, it is not like tootpaste only a smear from rag to keep corrosion at bay.

Ive had to do this with mine - it works but dont use more then a smear.

You will pass an mot with no airbag, or an airbag warning light on so you have no issues there. You will need to get the code read and reset. This is a seperate airbag ECU on you car i think, it's in front of the gearstick. Cost about £30 at your local dealer. Independant can't do this particular one afaik.

WRT to the cooling fan, did you just check the fusebox in the cabin, or did you check the maxifuse behind the battery? You are correct about the sensor on the rear of the heater outlet on the inlet manifold (green sensor), and it appaears to be working correctly. Check the fan relay and contacts as well (on the right hand side of the bay, near the ecu). It has a grey balck and grey purple large wire as far as i can remeber from memory.

I wouldn't mind betting this problem is casued by a packed up Fan Relay.

Towards the back right hand side of the engine bay there is a black plastic cover secured by two 10mm nuts. Release these and you can then see the two red relays once the covers are off.

One is for EFI the other for Fan Relay. A new one costs about £6 from Fiat. My car is on its 3rd now. When I was a little more inexperienced I changed the whole cooling fan (over £100 from Fiat) to find it was this £6 relay!

You'll know which is the fan relay because if you pull the EFI one the engine will not start. If it starts when you have removed one of the relays you have pulled the correct Fan relay!
