General Advice to negotiate

Hi folks, I hope someone can advise me on how to handle this situation. I hope my question is allowed. My Fiat 500 L developed a fault where the petrol gauge was not showing the right amount of petrol. A full tank shows 325 mile range (approx). I’d drive about a mile and it would drop to 270. After about 15 miles it would show just above halfway and show 56 miles. I took it to my mechanic who kept my car for three weeks and told me that he had to replace a big white unit, which he could not easily get hold of. He told me the name but I can’t remember. After three weeks he said that he had ‘a woman coming in to calibrate the engine with the unit’. A week later I had to take the car back in as nothing has changed. I paid £380 for this and he said he would get his guy on to it with a machine to sort it. That was Monday, it’s now Thursday and I’m going back on Saturday to find out what is happening. I know it’s a big job to replace the white thing and he showed me the old one in case I thought he hadn’t changed it. Hmmmm….I'm wondering now.
I’m a 72 year old woman and I don’t know enough to deal with this. Can someone give me some advice please as I can’t be fobbed off any more. When I originally took the car in he had a Fiat 500 up on a ramp and it was still there when I went to pick my car up. I know he has more expensive cars to deal with but paying almost half of my monthly pension makes my car expensive too! When I took it back he mumbled something about he hoped it want ..something else…I can’t afford to pay any more.
