Morning,

(this be a long post)

I am not a member but do use this site for a lot of advice and wanted people opinions, there is not right and wrong in the answer just advice.

Ok, I had a drink driver hit my parked car early Sunday morning, (damage was bumper ripped off and dent in rear quarter panel) they were caught and all is good there, I had a call from there insurance company yesterday asking me a couple of questions and said how much do I think my car is worth (Bravo 1.8 HLX 1998 R Reg, in ok condition 11 months MOT etc) I said maybe £800-£900, so in that conversation they said they will give me £900 and I get to keep my car but would have to give back the hire car straight away.

I went away thought about it last night called them this morning and said. Ok I want £1200 the extra for day off work to sort out a inconvience caused to me, and I want the hire car for a week to be able to look for a new car if needed.

They agreed to giving me £1100 plus the hire car for 7 days and I get to keep my car but as a cat D.

My dilema is do I fix it, scrap it for £200 or sell it for parts. would I make more that way?

Steven

depends on the damage really, if its just a case of new rear bumper and filling in a dent im sure u could hunt around a few scrappys and find a bumper the same colour as your car then get the dent filled and sprayed and sell it as a runner. other than that breaking it would fetch the more money than scrapping but a lot more hassle breaking it and posting all the parts/arranging collections etc

its worth repairing it if its a bumper and a scrape but remember its going to be registered as a cat D then when you sell it you have to tell the person that intends to purchase it thats its an insurance cat d write off and that the value is approximately 20-25% less than the booked price so may be worth repairing and keeping it

Cheers for responses - I dont think I want the hassle of breaking it, will have a look at bumper ect to fix it and sell it.

On another note - Not got much money for replacement car but been offered a 2004 54 Plate Fiat Stilo Active 1.4 16v with 60,000 on it for £1700 - What are they like and do you think its worth it?

I had the 5 door 1.2 active aircon model, it had 6 speed box, i bought it when it was 6 months old and it served me well as a daily, quite boring to drive but did what it said on the tin, it was p/exed for a zafira in 2007, but i had it 4 years trouble free, my dad has the 3 door active, he got it brand new in 2004 and its still going strong he likes it, they are good cars!

but make sure you get the cambelt and water pump changed if you go for it

cheers
