Abnormal shaking????

After changing the tyres and the shocks I have a very annoying trembling that starts at 120km/h and lasts up to 160km/h and then stops.Do the tyres need allignment or something? One more thing:I know that it's top speed should be 180km/h.I get a very irritating shake every time I pass 170.Is it because I am approaching it's top speed? Any advice would be appeciated. It's a 1996 1,6SX Bravo.

I have a 1998 1.6 16v sx not sure what the top speed is meant to be but had it to 130 a couple of times with only the slight expected tremble of the steering wheel, prob wont push it any more than that to find out if it shakes as the car is well light and i have visions of it sliding across the mway doing a few sommersaults on the way. Maybe check the tyres were balanced correctly

Sounds like you either have an un-balanced wheel, a duff shock or a bent wheel.

I assume the wheels were balanced when you had the tyres done?

Does the steering wheel wobble aswell?

To Sy:I assume that when you say 130 you talk about km and not miles per hour.

To Tom: They where balanced but the mechanic told me that they would need re-balancing after 200-300km.Anyway the car is booked for a change of oil so the tyres will be re-balanced as well.The steering wheel doesnt wobble but I'll have the mechanic check if any of the wheels is bent. If you have anything else in mind please advise because since I avoid bumps I really would like to know how I got the wheel bent If that proves to be the case.

Sounds like a rear wheel is out of balance. They should not need re-doing in 200kms if they have been done properly. I've never had to have a wheel redone unless I've thumped something with it.

A friend had an issue on his Boxter where they just could not get the wheels to run nicely. The balance machine said they were fine but every time the car would still wobble. Turned out to be a duff tyre and Pirelli eventually gave him a new pair.

I had the car's tyres re-balanced, and the car itself re-alligned today by a FIAT authorized dealer.(I wonder.. ...) and I am going to take her up for a drive and test her at speed.

Ive also had 130mph out of my 100 16v bravo with everything standard apart from wheels. It was only doing 4500 revs too and might of gone faster but i ran out of road.

I've easily had my 1.6 up to that speed, everything standard except the driver.

I decided to slow down as I was gaining on the car in front VERY fast. Also I don't think the rear tyres were in contact with the ground!

I think the MK2s are geared higher as mine was getting close to 6k.

mine is really low in revs in fifth gear think it would of gone more if id throttled it but the car just feels so unsteady at that speed, maybe if it had more weight or was lowered and handled better i'd push it but untill then thats the limit for me

Does yours have a rear spoiler? The prob is the airflow sticks to the roof and bootlid and acts like a wing lifting the back of the car.

The little spoiler on the HLX and HGT makes a big difference.

The wing style ones are a bit pointless though.

Yeah i think your right about the gear ratio's.
If i can remeber correctly when i did it, it went to 120 in 4th comfortably from 80 and then gradually went to 130 in 5th. I get no acceleration at all in 5th.

cruising on a motorway at 70-80 in 5th and put your foot down to overtake and nothing will happen, so i have to dump it in forth. I think 5th gear is just a pure ecomony gear.

I have the standard spoiler, but the car did feel quite stable at that speed. I have 16x7 wheels and lowered 40mm, maybe something to do with it?

Lowering 40mm won't make much difference, its the spoiler stopping the air from sticking to the bootlid that makes the most difference.

I keep planning to fit one to my car.

And as for the Barry Ollocks, seeing as we are currently in the bravo/a forum and 3 of us have had that speed outta the 1.6 i'm sure it would not benefit any off to lie about such a thing as we could be quite easily proven incorrectly but asure you its possible might take some build up but it gets there!

It is entirely possible your speedos are reading 130, that doesnt mean your car is doing 130!

For a start speedos UNDERREAD by around 10% as a design feature, and they become even less accurate as you get very fast.

When your speedo said 130 you were probably doing little over 115.
