Hi all,

I own a 2015 Abarth 500 with the stock 135bhp T-jet motor. The car has almost 180k km and is on factory components including the timing belt (I know risky).

Over the past year or so I’ve been fighting with an issue where the car makes a loud strange noise like crickets when warmed up and happens in all conditions - in idle, under load and at all speeds. I’m not talking about the valves opening and closing. It is most audible when I roll the passenger side window down and drive alongside a wall, but can also be heard very clearly when standing beside the car.

Of course I understand that metal expands when hot, so this could explain why the issue only occurs when the car is warmed up. I know that these are noisy engines, but this cannot be normal and it is driving me nuts.

So far I ruled out noise associated with the accessory belt and AC/alternator pulleys and tensioner by listening with a stethoscope. Listening to the block and valve cover I can’t hear anything other than the normal engine noise.

It’s difficult to say whether it increases with rpm, I will attach a recording here:

Has anyone heard a similar noise before? What can it be and how can I resolve it?
