A cheap way of Recording your driving.

I bought one about 3 months ago, brilliant bit of kit if you ask me!!

youtube .com/watch?v=EAug9N80jzw <-- part of my trip to work, the video audio is muted as the ZS had the mother of all boost leaks and it sounded naff! :(

Cost me £9 in the end, that included buying a 4GB memory card that is good for an hours recording..

It's a pity the industry doesn't make cameras compulsory in cars.
The tech is there to produce a camera witha high quality recording lens that will record when power is supplied & shut down shortly after power is turned off. The speed indication and GPS are also a good idea - not sure about the 'g-shock' facility though as any crunch will be heard through the mic.
There is no reason why a decent system can't be had for around the £100 mark. Although £100 seems a lot of money, this could be offset by insurance discounts for a retro-fit system and possibly a payment incentive scheme for footage sent to police.
I have sent loads of footage of artic/car/van etc drivers talking on mobiles whilst driving. I have also sent footage of (mainly) taxis driving through red lights at pedestrian crossings as well as a couple of near-misses at zebra crossings. Any fines handed out to drivers could be increased to include a reward for reporting.
Young drivers, especially could benefit by getting greatly reduced premiums for having black box fitted - especially if there was a version which monitored speeds - for example, if it was set to report excess speeds in built-up areas (even cheapo satnavs know the speed limits so the unit could be set with a tolerance of +30% - 50% for brief periodsto allow for overtaking etc). As a new driver, this kind of system would 'train' you to good driving habits.
When I say greatly reduced premiums, insurance could offer sensible prices to sensible drivers.
Insurance could be done on the basis that you sign to a company for 3 years (for example). If the average insurance for your car was £500 per year for an older driver with 5 year's ncd then your premium would be £1500 (perhaps third party only). A rep comes round to install the cam & set milage to match car's & take a payment of one agreed installment. 6 months later, rep comes round with laptop, check's cam's memory card mileage matches car's and takes next installment. By the end of the term, you have been conditioned to drive reasonably safely, the insurance company. If you are daft enough to write off your car mid term, you still owe all payments. If you change car mid term, the insurance send a rep to swap the cam over & adjust premiums accordingly.

That has to be better than the assumption that you are an idiot driver & treat you accordingly through exhorbitant premiums?

Of course, there will always be people who say this is a breach of their rights. As a professional driver, I have a tacho and numerous cameras watching over me. As a bus driver, I am eternally grateful for having the cameras as my witness to my abilities - I have lost count of the number of times I have been reported for bad driving & the video has saved my ass by proving I was in the right. In fact, the latest report was from a passenger who claimed I took the corners so fast it was throwing her out of her seat. Internal cameras showed that she was the only person to be affected (I suggested it was down to her wearing nylon nickers, petticoat & skirt) and on the cameras she didn't even look as if she was moving at all - the seats are memory foam covered with velour so not only do you sink into the seats, the velour is supposed to prevent sliding.

^^^ As much of a good idea i think that is i doubt any young drivers would go for it. I would if the insurance costs were considerably reduced, i dont drive fast all the time or like chav so wouldnt have anything to lose.

Nothing to lose?
I recently went bumper to bumper with a moron in my car. He claimed I was at fault, two lanes merged to one and I hit his rear 1/4 panel & ripped off his rear bumper.
I claimed it was his fault. Insurers wanted to go 50/50 as there were no independant witnesses.
Despite having over 30 years' no claims, insurers only give me their own maximum (current one gives 75%) and I can trim my payments buy offering to pay £500 excess plus £150 compulsory.
My video footage of the incident clearly shows the other driver tearing down my offside and cutting me up (the frame before impact clearly shows his front wheels crossing the white line).
Result - he has had to admit liability & pay for damage to my car - scrapes on bumper & slight grazes to paint just above bumper.
So, I have saved £650 excess plus my premiums would have gone up by £100 (insurance was due whilst all this was going on & I had to agree the additional premium as liability at that point was undecided) - so I have saved £750 this year and however long it would have taken me to claw back the good will on the premiums.
As the accident occured through a junction where everything had to turn left, the repairer said he will check the car's geometry and wheel alignment. I also agreed that they could touch up the bruise on the wing (rather than the insurance's "respray) if they would touch up a couple of stone chips around the car (as they have to make up the colour anyway)(y)
So when you think you have nothing to lose, like I tell others, you might be the best driver in the whole world - but there's plenty of idiots out there.
In fact, all those who drive like morons only get away with it because the rest of us are too worried about our own vehicles that we'll do anything to avoid the prang. I'm getting a bit fed up of dropping half my rubber onto the road to avoid these morons, not to mention all the additional wear to my brakes.

By nothing to lose I meant that if I were to have on installed I wouldnt have to drastically change my driving style or risk the whole system back firing on me. I cant really think of a downside to having a video camera system in the car.

Ahh, I see.
The only downside is that there will be millions of motorists out there who will scream 'big brother' or 'infringement of my basic rights' - which is fine, but I would far sooner have a camera watching my every move and know that I always have an independant witness on hand.
Another excellent use came to mind after a recent head on collision on a busy main road, nice, long, straight road, limit is 60 which drops to 50 around a junction but the temptation is to go much faster. Police want witnesses to the collision. How much of their time would be saved if they could simply pull the SD cards out of two cameras?
As it is, the road was closed for hours for accident investigators & the only way round was a detour lasting many, many miles & hours.

I installed one at the age of 19, and would have done earlier if the tech was available. It's already cut my premiums, and that was through squashing a stupidly high fradulant whiplash claim by another driver when I bumped into them.

They tried a £8k claim for a 4mph nudge, the GPS caliberated footage got it reduced to a £500 good will payment ;) :p

Finally got my car into the workshops yesterday. The guy felt I might have a slight problem with the free hire car...

It's a 56 plate blue panda.

And guess what I've got a spare of that's going in the back window

:D

Wonder if they'll notice?

Ever heard the expression "fitting a quart into a pint pot"?
It's a bit 'snug' which is strange because I never had these problems with my Uno, Metro or Micra (hire car)
