If you are lucky then you can update your map for FREE to map to <Version>1055.10459</Version>

As we know on 2015 500X uConnect 5 the car got free updates from the TomTom site for one year. I did this in 2015/2016. Then in 2018 I go TomTom offer for a years updates so I took this offer up. Since 2018 I've be on map Version1020.9288 @ 2018-11-14T11:00:00.

So last night I logged into my TomTom account and it said it wanted to update my device. So I plugged the update USB stick in and bingo it was updated to V.1055.10459 @ 2020-08-15T12:00:00

So this is interesting in that this map installed is over a year old but 2 years more current than my last paid for update.

Forgot to add the only cockup I made was I forgot to copy the update USB stick before updating the car as the process wipes the map data after update. Remeber to copy the USB stick before inserting in the car!

I'm wondering if the this is just a freak event or because my map was so old TomTom wanted to tempt me to buy future updates with this 2020 map.

From my point of view they are welcome to try buy my Garmin is the better Nav device and it comes with free updates. That said I generally only use the Garmin on EU trips or trips to distant UK locations. I tend to use the uConnect for my local areas/counties that I already know well by road but need to find a specific street location and for that older maps are normally sufficient.

So TomTom, thank you for my free update and I'll be back in another two years time :)

Hi
Thanks for this. I had exactly the same. Free update to V.1055.10459. However, I keep getting an error when I try to upload to the device and the new maps won't install. Any idea what the issue could be?

When you say upload to device do you mean loading the USB stick?

You have to have a pre-prepared USB stick (by the uConnect system) to then load the update onto the USB stick.

I've had a problem in the past where my old router was not happy handling the large map files for my Garmin. Used to hang. Also had this (if I recall correctly) with TomTom.

In total about 8GB is sent via the router on a single thread and some older routers can baulk at this.

Hi, thanks for your message. Yes I mean loaded on to stick and then uploaded to device. The loading onto stick works well but half way through the process with the device, it say there's an error. Perhaps I should use a different USB stick!

Different USB stick would be a good step to try.

We all have some very old USB sticks and the propensity for errors with large files would normally go unnoticed with typical data, music and picture files.

One of the update files, cline.dat is over 2GB in size so could easily span defective cells. The are other very large files as well.

That sorted it. A Scandisk USB worked. Thanks

Brilliant!

It is not often that a simple solution not really thought of can overcome an otherwise major and potentially challenging and frustrating issue.

I hope TomTom keep this free update open and available for other 500X/uConnect 5 owners on outdated maps.

i found like 2 years ago a forum in italian where they had figured out how to hack it basically and provided the new map file download and how to edit a text file in the prepared usb to make it work, at the time i did it successfully, that was in like 2019, now im looking again trying to find it to update it again and cant seem to find it.. will report back if i do..

Hi guys, I've recently bought a 2nd hand 500x & I came across the thread for the update. It appears that it has never been updated since new. Might be a dumb question, but how exactly do you register the UCONNECT 5” to the TOMTOM Home app or is there a different way? I’ve had a TomTom device in the past & I’ve connected it to the PC by USB.

Thanks.

Fresh update.

Managed to get latest map for Europe V1125.12278 for free.

What puzzled me was some strange things going on.

I plugged my current USB device for uConnect into my PC and TomTom Home (TTH) said that I was up to date. Odd because the last map update I did was in June 2021.

TTH also said there was an update of TTH to V2.23. So I did this update and tied again. Same result, no updates etc. However on the TTH Website I could have purchased a map update for £40.

Next I formatted another blank USB in my uConnect read to update the system. Back to PC and now TTH offered my an update. Needless to say I grabbed the update. All seems to have gone well to both USB stick and uConnect.

Like the last time round you may be lucky.
