General 4x4 2 month challange

Its ALIVE! I did a little dance after filming.

Still a lot to do, order a gasket set (yeh I know I should have just done it right first time around but its not a big deal)

I have a weep from the water pump so I need to check the other unit or price up a new one.

I need to swp the rad over to the good one but wiring is slightly different.

Brakes... I dont even know if they work

I think im going to have a week off though after working in to the night to get this far most evenings.

Just also wanted to say thanks to every one, I beat my own time scale by quite allot (to the supprice of myself) And it wouldn't have been possible if it were not for the forum and the wisdom of others on here.

For a giggle I thought id take a look at the paint on the body, the bonnet is terrible.

This bonnet and to a degree the wings have been subject to a very nasty spray job as evident by the "mumps" where moisture has reacted and caused splodges.

It doesnt look to bad till you run a mop over it and take the dullness away

20 seconds with a clean and a mild cutting compound

Also the color is off on the bonnet and incredibly thin

I present : Mumps

As I haven't been able to go outside much today I thought I would take the other engine in to the shed and see whats what.

My back will not thank me later, couldn't get engien hoist in to small space to lifted it.

This is the stripdown:

Any engine builders out there? shall I just way this in for scrap?

hydro-locked engines.. i have dealt with a fair few.

it looks bad, but you will find its not so bad when you clean them up.
i have had them like this and recovered worse than that.
when you have degreased them, fill each cylinder with petrol as it is lighter than degreaser. that will find gaps way better than any thing else. thinners works well too as its even lighter.

personally i would have thought that they are not bad.. a clean up and that should free them. wire wool and WD-40 works well as does diesel. if you have one, use a dremel with a wire wheel to remove any bad rust spots. just hope it has not pitted the cylinder wall :/.

to get the valves to bed in again:
take them out, clean them up best you can and the cylinder head valve seats. stick the valve back in the cylinder, use a cordless drill and stick it on the end of the valve where it would be pressed down by the rocker, put some cutting fluid on both the valve surface and valve seat, apply a bit of pulling pressure and "spin" the valve around on its seat.

do this on both valves (intake and exhaust) for a while, then properly "fit" them with the valve spring in the cylinder head. screw a spark plug back into the corrisponding cylinder you have just cleaned and sit some petrol in it. leave it over night and see if the petrol leaks out past the valves.
if it does not, you have some great seating valves ready for use.

just repeat for the remaining 3 cylinders.

its not the pro way of doing it but it works really well. it definitely fixes a bad sitting valve.

being as you have all the cylinder head all in bits, may as well replace the valves stem oil seals too. they may come with a head gasket kit.

i was doing this kinda stuff before i went to college to "learn" how to do this kinda stuff.

Thanks John, I shall have a crack with your advice, your right - its not as bad as it looks from the outset.
Still no movement as of yet after 12 hours of cleaning fluid. Ill try petrol and thinners. I have seen brake fluid recommended as well?

Its a simple engine at the end of the day and rare so I think ill have a dam good go as saving it, and ill do it properly as well. I dont think it possible that I could have found a better engine to learn with.

Thanks all, I have taken the crank up to some one who knows a lot more about this than I do.
Its all on spec and he commented on its good condition after seaing the original photos of the strip down.
So, I need to home the cylinders, measure, then get piston rings.

Not much in the way of progress, Im stripping the carb at the moment and cleaning as its tick over is not right, it also all being documented including jet sizes ect as I know others need some info (im so sorry im taking an age)

Hate dirty parts, so cleaned up the second hand slave, rebuilt the calipers and gave them some paint.... I have no idea why I go to this effort for parts no one will ever see!

And lastly, a cold start vid (taken some time between all of this)

As well as all of the above, Just gone in with family for a Toyota town ace, with a car transporter trailer!

So should be able to move the panda about for paint and perhaps collect some more classics soon :)

Good effort as always. Shame the MkII clutch and flywheel from Project Peterborough wouldn't fit you could have had that.

I do have a 965 carb' if you need one spare or for parts. ;)

Getting there slowly, things are starting to stack up.

Thought process,

Ill refurbish the brakes, they need doing. Well no point putting them back on if the driveshadt I have is weeping, oh its bent, well ill refurbish the driveshaft. Ok to do that I have to split a ball joint, well, as i'm here new ball joints.

Well, I have most of the strut off now and save me a job later, I dont want to split the ball joint again I better look at the front strut and do the shocks....

Then the car is in one million bits and I have a parts bill that can keep a small economy afloat.

Todays work:
How to remove a drive shaft the hard way!
