Hi,

I have a strange issue with my marea 20v's handbrake: it doesn't really work. I've stripped the calipers at both sides and there's loads of meat left on the pads and the disks are practically brand new. The pads have been properly copper-slipped where they touch the mounting bracket and no, there isn't any copper slip on the friction surfaces.

I've tried adjusting the cable repeatedly - going from "you almost can't pull away even when its off" to "this lever isn't really attached to anything in particular" settings and all the places in between. I've also cleaned both the pads and the disks with brake cleaner, with no real effect.

The issue I have is that brake won't hold the car on any sort of an incline - even the small ramps up kerbs. It just makes a squeaking noise and continues rolling.

I've had probelms with FIAT drum systems before & this has usually been fixed by replacing shoes which look brand new. I wasn't expecting this sort of behavoiur from the disks.

Any ideas?

How old are the cables? Also where did you buy them from?

If its anything like the coupe handbrake system, you've probaby got a stretched cable and its only holding one side. Or the cables maybe arent routed correctly under the car, meaning there is practically no tension in the cable either.

Either scenario, if your up for it, replace the cables with genuine fiat cables. I done mines and it made a huge difference. Before the handbrake felt spongy and i would always leave it in gear. Now i could *possibly* pull a handbrake turn. Its still not an amazin system, but it works :D
