Hi guys.
New to this forum so this is my first contribution.
I have a Ducato Maxi with a 2.8 litre turbo diesel automatic transmission. The transmission was fitted in Australia by the importing dealer.
The box has just started crashing when changing into neutral. Very loud noise. It is ok if the engine is switched off and restarted.

Any clues would be appreciated

Hi & welcome to the forum
Not sure what would be causing this crashing when going into neutral, doesn't sound logical. The only thing I can think of - would be that it is trying to engage two gears at once - but would think this would not happen selecting neutral?
I would be checking all the electrical connections especially the plugs near the multifunction switch on the selector shaft & also any other electrical plugs that relate to the transmission.
With these new auto transmissions being electronic any bad connections could cause problems, maybe the lockup clutch is not releasing for some reason & this would be contolled by the ECU.
The box itself is an ZF 4HP-20 transmission as far as I know. Have you had it checked at an Auto Transmission place, any luck since your post, as it has been 6 days?
Please post a reply as I would be interested to know what the cause was if it has been fixed.
Hope that is of some help - Cheers :)

Hey FreeSpirit. Sorry I did not reply at the time. The problem appeared to correct itself. It is now back with a vengeance. When I start the vehicle and try to select reverse there is a double thump noise and the transmission warning light and beeper comes on. The trans locks up. If I turn everything off, switch on and off again to cancel the warning, then restart it the problem seems to rectify itself. It only seems to occur on first startup of the day. This is happening almost every time I start up the vehicle from cold.
I have not taken it to a transmission specialist yet but that may be the last option. Do you still think faulty connection?
Any ideas

Well, I am back again. Welcome to my saga.
Issue with the transmission has continued till recently I lost patience and took it to a Fiat repairer on The sunshine Coast last July 21st. They cleaned, tightened and greased all terminals from the ECU main harness to the transmission and TCM. After road testing they declared the fault gone. Fault re-emerged after standing for a few days and diagnostics pointed to the inhibitor switch. This has now been replaced. Drove it home (150km) and the vehicle played up after about 100 kms briefly. Surging and backing off, vehicle slowing and speeding up etc. Was able to drive home with no more issues. Next day the problem recurred after the vehicle had travelled about 15 kms. Engine and transmission at operating temperature. Sent it back to the dealer on the back of a truck. They were able to replicate the fault after the vehicle reached operating temperature. This is a new fault, and there are no warning lights. They think it is the central electronic unit. ($1000.00 plus) I think the fault is in the connectors on the harness. Any Ideas Please. Johols47 :bang:
