That would depend on how you interpret "synthetic based" ;) (but I'd tend to agree with you).

As usual with FIAT, the recommended oil is a Selenia one (WR) and these are normally (at least for the newer engines) prohibitively expensive in the UK.

It is surprisingly as cheap as chips here, though:

...and buying a 5 + 2 litre (just to be safe), would take you over the free delivery price, I think.

(I must admit, I was surprised by the price, it isn't widely available, but might be a bit cheaper elsewhere).
That oil you linked states 1.9jtd under it? Is that irrelevant?

Your 2litre psa hdi / jtd engine has nothing in common with the 2.3 or 2.8 jtd engines at all.

The price for the 5lires from shop for parts is very good.
Their delivery free lower limit is £25 so a filter may get you past that with the oil.

2litre hdi engine is not "fussy" about oil it is a very well proven basic design that will run to mega high mileages with just regular basic servicing. Regular being the key term.

On the subject of servicing if coolant hasn't been changed in last 5 years , do it.

Shows up (only) as 02>06 Ducato 2.0JTD for me on that link (and it's the oil in the handbook)

It is, however, also the correct oil for a number of Fiat/Alfa etc. 1.9JTD and other engines of the time.

If you search by the product, not the vehicle, it returns a similar page but with a drop-down box of all applicable vehicles, and the Alfa 1.9JTD is the one in focus in the box (but your Ducato is in the drop-down).

If you want to convince yourself, do a search by vehicle type starting at "Fiat Van Parts" on the menu bar, and click down through the appropriate options.

It's getting a new cambelt next Wednesday, so that'll be done then. Last coolant change was 2017 I believe...

Ordered 7L of the recommended oil from S4P and also their suggested oil filter, which I believe may be OEM?

Either way, £35 delivered is only a smidge more than anywhere else is for decent oil.

How annoying... Just seen S4P sell the proper gearbox oil for only £5.45 a litre. Should've added that to my order!!

Decided to place a new order anyway, worked out £4 cheaper than Halfords and is the proper stuff. Pays to check everything first!

Stiff gear lever is more likely to be the change cables need lubrication.
I use a very light mineral oil for this, air tool oil actually.
find the top of the cables dribble oil down the inner cable into where it appears from the outer cable. You may require a lot of patience as this can take some time.
A syringe such as those used for ink cartridge refilling is useful for this.

Eventually oil will drip out of the cables gearbox end , don't start panicking and think your gear box is leaking.

By change cables, do you mean gear linkages?

Oh is it change by solid link rods from gear lever to gear box rather than by two cables linking gear lever to gear box?
From looking at images online, it is a solid unit. I think!
Going to get under the van tonight and get my partner to move the gear stick back and forth and work it out. Will do a test spray with a bit of duck oil to see if that temporarily cures it, if so then I know what the issue is and can do it properly.

Seems there are cables after another look online - again - not sure really, will find out for sure when I get under it and see for myself.

This looks perfect for you

Later van in video but as he says it's very similar and earlier vans have same problems.
Especially motor homes which unlike vans aren't used everyday.
Your new van has been used infrequently like a motor home.

Got under it and sprayed what I could with duck oil for now. Gear stick is smoother I believe now. It's mostly stiff getting out of gear now I think.

Driving it for the day today and the gear change is definitely freed up, I expect a proper greasing as detailed above will get it back to as new.
