Technical 2004 1.6 Leaky transmission

Hi all,so I have my 1.6 with 260k on the clock and I've parked it for about a month now noticed my transmission is leaking,took the battery and battery tray off but I can't find the leak it's somewhere on the gear selector area not visible tho...[emoji21] thinking of dropping the trans but if you guys have any better ideas let me know as it will be a pain to drop in my garage with no heat and the some jack stands! Thanks!

If it's gear oil (gear oil has a particularly distinctive smell) then it's probably leaking from the gearbox output shaft, which will be a gearbox-off job to swap the oil seal, or it could be leaking from the driveshaft oil seal, which is a fair bit easier (but still involves replacing an oil seal). First of all, work out where the oil is leaking from.

If it's engine oil (tends to be more black and smells of oil, rather than gear oil) then it's a crankshaft oil seal which is "see above". If the oil leak is not severe, just check the oil levels in the engine and gearbox.. top them up a bit as needed (but resist the temptation to over-fill it) and then just check it/wipe the underneath every now and again.

Hey man thanks for your reply you really went deep on the explanation ? am a mechanic,forgot to mention that i don't know them fiats well and I don't have a shop at the moment anyway I was asking basically if there are any common spots the 1.6 leak from and yeah it's gear oil!thanks

Nope, no known or common faults associated with these cars leaking gear oil.

Have you checked that it's not leaking from the differential?

No it's not from the differential I will probably have to drop the trans but it's ok,thanks guys!

Thanks for the advice Peter all tho I prefer to drop the trans and do it right as I don't really trust those products stopleak etc

It sometimes works with small leaks...
