Hi all I just fitted a new timing belt to the ducato 2.8jtd (T reg 1999). firstly it wouldn't run then I re set it with the injector pump locked, it now runs (kind of!)and it is pumping out a lot of smoke with no acceleration.
I have two queries:-

1. Which of the two timing marks on the camshaft pulley do I use? is it the large cut-out, or the small notch???

2. The crankshaft pulley does not lock onto the crankshaft gear in any way so what is the correct setting for the crankshaft??? I have had two different answers one states that the crankshaft gear dowel should be in line with the mark on the plastic housing, and another which states that it should be in the vertical position but doesn't state whethe the dowel should be top or bottom!!!!

I have just packed up for the night but I need it running tomorrow please help!

Hi
How's this for service.
I hope this gets you out of trouble. It is an interference engine & you seem to have been lucky the valves haven't done a dance on the pistons !!! The injection pump timing is not relevant with CRD injection
See attached pics for Timing 2.8JTD 8140.43s engine model 94KW/127HP

Cheers mate,
I have the exact same info from "Autodata" cd, but that data does not clarify which mark on the camshaft pulley to set it to.

So am I to take it that it does not matter about the fuel pump???

If I lock it with a 5mm drill bit it should deffo be working but it isn't!!

I had just done the usual of marking the belt and pulleys (but not the fuel pump pulley) and marked the new belt the exact same. (this usually saves a lot of fiddling around with timing marks).

Please can someone who has done this job successfully clarify.

if I understand correctly the 2nd generation ducatos 1999-2003 started out with the 2.8 i.d TD [8140.43 ]engine and only switched to the jtd with the facelift

I don't know if there IS any timing difference between the 2 engines as they are virtually identical , but are you absolutely sure you have the correct engine code?

Hi again
I agree with lebesset are you sure you have got the correct engine - is it a Common Rail Diesel (JTD). I thought the CRD 2.8 JTD started in 2002. If this is the case & yours is not a CDR (JTD) then the Injection pump timing IS relevant. As if you followed the timing diagram it should be correct. If it is a 2.8 99 model the engine code should be 8140.63?
Have you got the timing diagram for that model engine as according to my data the crankshaft has different timing marks - the dot should be @ 6 o'clock & the other mark at 3 o'clock lining up with the mark on the crankcase & the injection pump timing is relevant. The camshaft pulley has the mark on the back instead of the front as in the 2.8JTD engine.

Thanks guys the camshaft mark is on the back of the pulley, but which one??
One is a large cut out notch, and the other is a small punch mark!
the engine code I have is 8140.43.
but what are the crankshaft gear marks? is it the locating pin?

I would think it is the notch that is the camshaft mark & there are 3x 2.8s in that model range hence the other model number (8140.63) see attached pics for the 8140.43 2.8 TD which is not the same as the 8140.43 JTD.

Thanks guys got it sorted with keen cunning!
Its the smaller mark on the back of the camshaft pulley, with the injector pulley locked with a 5mm drill bit and the crankshaft pulley dot mark and woodruff keyway in line with the engine (i.e. the dot mark at six o'clock and the keyway at twelve o'clock where the alignment of the engine is the vertical plane)

All is well now!

Hope this helps someone.
