My 2.0L W reg weekend has started making some very unhappy noises from the drive belt area and I suspect the water pump. I'll get it confirmed when it goes in for an MOT with JCS in Kegworth on Friday, and if I'm right I know the consequences - engine out and big labour costs for a cheap part replacement.

The cambelt was done at 75,000 and I've had the car a year, from 90,000. It's now on 111,000 and I was planning to keep it for a couple more years, till the belt was due again, as I love the car and especially the engine. However I'm thinking I could ebay it for £500 and buy a new one with that plus the labour costs. But then of course I'd have all the little problems I've sorted out in the past year to find again.

What do you think? Is taking a well looked after (and occassionally ragged :)) 2.0L to 150,000 realistic? The Coupe specialist in Brum who MOTd it a year ago reckoned he'd seen non-turbo Coupes go to 150,000. If I get the cambelt done early at the same time as the water pump, is the clutch likely to go? It's mainly motorway miles it gets used for.

Looking at the receipt for the cambelt it doesn't say anything about the water pump being replaced. Fingers crossed for the alternator, I just suspected the water pump as it sounds like when the water pump went on a (15 year) old fiesta.

Any easy way to check? I don't seem to be having more electrical problems than usual (ABS and brake light sometimes stay on, but go off if you switch off and on again - trusty Fiat electrics.) And whilst I've had the temperature gauge jumping at one point over the summer, JCS reckoned dodgy electrics again so best leave well alone, and it doesn't overheat when sitting in traffic.

Reassuring that it's not "normal" for a water pump to go around this time, I was just worried as the advice always seems to be replace it with the cambelt - I guess as a preventative measure.
