Technical 1998 Ducato campervan Starting Problem

Have recently bought a 1998 ducato 2.5td campervan and within the last couple of weeks have a problem with the ignition.
sometimes I put the key in and turn the ignition it wont start/ turn over, and sometimes when I turn the ignition off it stays running.
It will start if I turn the ignition off and on again.

sounds like dirty contacts within switch try spraying with WD40 inside and out hope this helps jt

will try a bit of WD 40 but did that a couple of days ago and had no change..

You will need to strip it down.
WD40 only removes the grease in the base of the switch,you will need to use electrical contact cleaner on it.
It's slightly corrosive.

hi, try a product called "servisol super 10". you can get it at maplins. it is a switch cleaner and lubricant. easier than stripping down ignition. just spray into lock, leave for 30 secs and then work lock on and off with key. might be worth disconnecting battery first to stop van starting. i think it is also available in auto parts shops.

I had the same problem with my mk1 ducato and if its the same setup,there is a plastic module at the rear of the switch and this contains the contacts and the wiring loom.
On mine it was not possible to get into this unit without breaking it..Good luck.

Same ignition so I have taken the bottom connectors of and cleaned with contact cleaner also flushed out the ignition barrel with it as well, going to leave for a few days to dry out and see how things are.
Have two sets of keys going to try and only use the one set from now on....

Tried cleaning ignition with WD 40 / and contact cleaner none has worked, next I will have to buy new ignition contacted dealer today and he gave me a part no. 59232004 and price of 165 Euro, looked on line and found a similar ignition with a part no. 46421642.
Can anybody tell me is there any difference between them they look the same to me...........

Put new ignition on and problem is still there, think it maybe a bad connection on the starter motor as when it is running I have a power kill switch to the battery and when I turn the power of the motor home still stays running.


Any body have any similar problems with starter motor and bad connections.
Any advice appreciated................

Watch the battery and oil lamp

If they DIM then battery power is being diverted

If they stay bright.. there is no circuit

Check for a main earth cable issue before worrying about ignition switch

As suggested above for the starting problem, check the condition of battery positive, and earth connections first.

As suggested by earlier posts. poor contact in the ignition switch could also be the cause of cranking problems.

With the failure of the engine to stop, there are two possible causes.

Firstly, as hinted at earlier in the thread, a faulty ignition switch, which does not always fully break the circuit for the stop solenoid valve on the injection pump.

Secondly the stop solenoid valve could itself be faulty, and sticking in the open or run position, when the ignition is switched off.

Accessing the stop solenoid valve could be problematic if key code fitted. See post #21 on linked thread.

I applaud the sentiment behind your post, but I am afraid that it will fall on deaf ears. If my finger counting is correct, the OP only posted on this particular problem, and that was about 4.5 years ago. It seems that like many others, the OP has disappeared into the outer darkness.

I have a suspicion that, when forum members have suggested a simple (and often inexpensive!) remedy to a problem that the OP has convinced themselves must be both tricky and costly, that they are reluctant to admit they were wrong and therefore don't update the thread.
