General 1997 Cinqy Problems

Hi,

I'm after a bit of advice please.
My Cinqy has been giving me problems recently. When sitting idle at traffic lights the engine seems to be ticking over really fast and noisy. Sometimes the revs go up and down, making the car sound like it's breathing! This happens when idle and when driving.
Also the engine just cuts out. I can be in neutral just revving the engine and it will cut out. Can be slowing down to take a corner when the engine will just cut out.
Was wondering if anyone can direct me as to where I should be looking under the bonnet to sort this problem out.
(can do without another trip to the garage, I've already forked out for new front and rear suspension and an exhaust this year)

Does it do it hot or cold or both?

Does it restart OK after stalling?

Hi Fingers.

No warning lights come on.

The cutting out seems to be when it's cold. The uneven revving and fast tick over is pretty much constant hot or cold.

Has restarted ok after stalling so far. Worried that eventually it won't and I'll be stuck somewhere!!

The cutting out is possibly the crank sensor.

Hunting idle is usually MAP sensor related, but you'd expect the ECU light to come on.

I'd start with the map sensor pipe and connections.

I think a lot of idle problems eventually point to the map sensor - alos check that any of the other vac pipes are ok, the hunting revs up and down could also be a failing lambda sensor too, I think.
