Hello to you all. I am a new member to this forum so I am sorry if my problem has been covered numerous times before. My son has a 1997 Mk1 Punto 60 S which has started to become troublesome when starting from cold. When attempting to start the car first thing in the morning, it will turn over normally but will not fire. A gentle "bump" start and away it goes. Once it's been started it is fine, and he can stop and start it all day - until the following morning. Rather than going through the process of elimination, any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks Dave. It's not the battery. As previously stated, it will turn over and over and over normally (without flattening the battery) but will not fire. The gentle "bump" obviously causes something to work as it then fires straight away.

I haven't had chance to have a look yet, but the thought occurred to me that if it is the earth, would the starter motor turn the engine over at the normal speed (as it does) as this is earthed through the same point? Well worth a try though. Thank you.

Thank you for the welcome. I have cleaned up and replaced the gearbox earth, so we'll have to see in the morning. However, my son suggested that it idled more smoothly following the surgery than it did before. Fingers crossed.

please be aware that bump starting the car can destroy the cat converter (don't want extra costs). in the meantime i cant think of what could be causing this. do you have any lights on the dash?

Hi.

I am aware of the problem bump starting can cause re the cat but when it's the only way to get it started........... I have cleaned up the gearbox earth lead connections and whilst my son thinks that the car runs better it has not at all altered the starting problem. Are there any relays anywhere relating to the starting? There are no warning lights (they go out as they should), and the fuel pump primes as it should.

Once again, any ideas would be greatfully received.

Thanks,

Nigel.

Changed the plug leads whch has helped a little. However I'm still told that on occasions (when it is cold weather) the problem still persists. Does anyone know if there's a relay related to the starting system? The fuel pump etc works as it should. Thanks. Nigel.
