I recently purchased a 1971 500F.
I replaced the timing chain, rubber belt, plugs, wires, air filter, leaking drive shaft boots and fluids.
Well my wife wants heat, so I ordered the appropriate rubber and fiber hoses as well as the metal tube (between the two)

Now my issue - With the hoses in place the metal tube literally places itself (as well as a hole to mount the cable management tab)
BUT! The metal tube contacts the starter AND one of the exhaust tubes, making the normal engine movement impossible.
Upon further investigating, my engine case is stamped 126XXXXXXX

I thought the 126 engine ONLY mated to the synchro gearbox, yet mine is non synchronized.

Are the cases interchangeable ?

It’s not a learning curve….just straight up!

It is probable that if you have a 126 engine and a NON-synchro box that somebody has changed the bell housing---they are interchangeable. Just to confirmthat it is a 126 bell-housing, the starter should be on the right-hand side of the gearbox (looking from the rear of the car)---if it was a 500 bell-housing, the starter would be at the top of the bell-housing. Are you SURE that it is a NON-synchro box---or is it a 126 box with buggered synchros?

Thank you for responding! The starter IS on the right side (restricting my ability to install the metal heater tube)
As to my transmission - I must be stopped to get into first gear.

That is normal even with the 126 synchro gearbox. Rule 1 never try and go into 1st or reverse while moving 😀

You most probably will have to fit a 126 heater trunking. My car came with the 126 engine and bits already fitted, so I have never had this problem---perhaps a member who has done the conversion can advise you better than I can.

Hey,

as far as I know the gearbox bell from the 500R and the 126 are the same (starter on the side). Still, the gearbox from the 500R is not synchronised.
When I changed from 500F engine to the 126 engine including the 126 synchro gearbox, I had to change the metal heater tube to the one from the 126. Even though I bought the correct metal tube, it was not fitting correctly and I had to modify the metal tubes mounting tabs. My part supplier said this is kind of normal and always needs to be adjusted.

Another important difference is the starter cable mounting (I mean the one which is connected to the starter lever, not the one which supplies the starter with current). For my 500F set up it was mounted to the body, with the 126 set up it is mounted to the metal tube.

From what I remember I also had to take care of the current supplying starter cable. Due to the different starter position the power cable needed to go a different way. Here one should make sure that the cable is not stressed or rubs against something.

Hope this helps.
Cheers

That does help a lot! Thank you! Odd that the the two body styles are have a similar configuration. I will order a 126 metal tube.
