Technical 1242 8v SPI Preparing Engine For Turboing

Hi guys,

I've got some of Dans bits fitted to the car finally, so I now have the stilo inlet manifold fitted, with a new TB as I filled the idle control port on my old one!

Just awaiting some further instruction on connections for idle and coils and stuff before I do any more! Everything is gonna be run through the relay board now as before I had some connected direct to the MS end DB37 but I now have a new relay board to MS cable.

Just whilst I've been out there looking at it its got me thinking about some of my MS relay board and sensor connections and I just wanna check if they are OK. With my sensor grounds I have taken them all to one place and connected them (just on the inner wing) they are all soldered and heatshrunk to one large ring (ex battery earth ring) and bolted on to the earth point. Is this OK?

Also my relay board connection called engine gnd I have literally connected to a wire that goes to the head and is bolted on. Should this not be connected to battery negative?

Many thanks in advance

Lenny

It runs! This is the first start up since fitting Dans MS2. Its a but rough but its running! Just need to sort the cooling system (insert a bleed point and replace leaking rad) so I can get it running for longer to check the sensors etc. along with Dan, who has been a major help to me!

Hi Dan,

Yea I'll try get the cooling done tomorrow! My foot is on the throttle yes, if you look at the butterfly you can see its open at the start, then I close it a bit to get to reasonable revs. But when I close the throttle the engine dies, and it won't start with the throttle closed (possibly the idle stepper motor windings connected the wrong way?)

Many thanks again

Hi guys,

As you may have read on my other thread I have some bent valves on my 1368 16v. Gonna be getting a new head on Friday and sticking it on. Just wondering if anyone has a set of cam locking tools for the 16v FIRE engines that I can borrow please? Think I may be struggling to buy a set by the time I buy the head, HG set and bolts!

Many thanks in advance

Lenny

EDIT - Also to add, has anyone had any experience with using one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FIAT-PUNT...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2a1c300651 ??

Hi guys,

Finally got round to doing some bits on the car, here are a couple of pics and videos. I've also attached a datalog from driving the car around my street, was wondering if you Megasquirt guys could have a look at it for me and see whats what please?

I let it warm up on the driveway until WUE was off before I went round the street a few times. Seems to go lean in some places, but don't know if this is due to the short distances I was driving, go, stop, go stop etc. can't get out on any long roads until I get it in for an MOT. But hopefully it will shed some light on what I should do next as far as mapping the MS.

I haven't done anything at all to Dan's map other than change the base timing to match my trigger wheel. So will probably need some tuning to suit my engine.

I know I need an alternator as it is charging the battery, then not intermittently. So this will be sorted. And the alternator belt is very slightly catching the engine mount, so I'll sort this too. And the engine bay needs a good tidy up after tearing it all apart to find a problem which turned out to be bent valves!

But anyway I'll stop rambling on now, please have a look at the datalog and see if it looks OK, that would be a great help to a newbie like me.

Many thanks in advance as always.

Lenny

Attached is another datalog or me gently building the revs up to around 3000 stationary on the driveway, seems to me its going lean? Don't know if I can use this to judge though as the engine isn't under any load?

Doesn't seem like its too far away to be honest, just needs a bit of tweaking to the map that Dan was using for it to run my engine. Well at least thats what I'm hoping lol.

Thanks again guys

Lenny

Sort the alternator as voltage fluctuations wont help things, neither will the catching belt.

Havent got MLV on this computer but will check when next on laptop. Are you sure that the timing needed changing as it will run better with a bit of advance. I did have cams however.

You want to see where it goes lean and see if it corresponds with the drop in revs. Probably will.

You then want to ad a little fuel to that cell and see how it changes.

Anybody else think it sounds tappy still or just the recording.

Guessing youve got the full version rather than trial now? I wouldnt use autotune until you have it idling well as it will prob make things worse.

As i said, time to learn how to use the MS and basic mapping now ;)

The tapping definitely sounds a lot worse on the recording than in real life, it sounds nothing like that for real, sounds like a diesel on the video. Only just watched the video back, sounds awful!

I am aiming to sort the alternator tomorrow hopefully. The idle seems fine sometimes then not so good at others, will have a play with the VE bins around there tomorrow after I sort the alternator and belt.

Thanks again :)

Lenny

EDIT - as for the timing, I only changed the first tooth angle from 98 degrees (on Dan's map) to 95 degrees. This got my timing marks in line with the strobe.
