I'm presently getting 10 mpg from a 1.4 litre Fiat Bravo (p reg with 54,000 miles on clock)!

The fuel consumption was poor before the MOT but it passed its MOT without an issue on emissions. It's been getting worse since then.

The garage reckoned it might be that the valves were getting clogged up with carbon since it's used for lots of short journeys, but adding a cleaning agent to the fuel didn't help at all.

The tyre pressures are fine, it starts fine, runs fine. In fact everything about it is great other than the fuel consumption- no running on or anything. The exhaust has a small leak but nothign major.

Any suggestions?

thats really insane mileage!

for 1.4's (i have one) workshop manual states that 23 mpg (= 10 l per 100 km) is normal for city conditions. I had 24.7 mpg (9.5 l per 100 km) on last tank. So high consumption seems to be given from birth to these engines. My bravo has 98 000 km (70 000 miles) on its back thought!

Your case is a bit insane tho. What i see as problem: ECU (possibly - wrong battery, made ecu resset and it re-relearned in wrong style), LAMBDA probe device, or fuel PLUMBing problem.

with that kind of mileage, something is wrong!
perhaps a maf fault, its even possible with that kind of mileage that you have a fuel leek somewhere

how short are the trips? i only ask as our car is used for short trips ie less than 4 miles and the MPG can be as low as 22 and this is on a brand new engie with 7k

Bloody hell. i think if i ragged my hgt around all the time i would still get double that.. the 1.4 12v engine isnt very fuel efficent...average about 24 round town aint they. suppose to be anyway!!!
