Technical 1.9 Diesel 'Whirring' noise

Hi Guys,

I've had a 'whirring' noise coming from the engine the last few weeks when I accelerate in 1st or 2nd gear, and ONLY in 1st & 2nd, it stops when I change to 3rd...
I have asked a mechanic friend of mine who thinks it may be an internal gear box fault, has anybody else had anything similar?
I have looked at replacing the gear box and in all honesty I can not afford the prices I seem to be seeing!! Are there any options available to me?!

Google M32 gearbox read the posts relating to Vauxhalls as well as Fiat they use the same box.

Is that what's wrong with yours? I had my bearings replaced twice on my 1.9

Thanks Jimbob, I've been googling, but most issues seem to be in 6th gear, mine is in 1st & 2nd when I accelerate, did you buy parts and have somebody repair, or did you buy a re-conditioned gearbox?

Luckily I had bought a warranty direct policy as I didn't want to own the car out of warranty as it had had to many faults in warranty.

The main dealer repaired the gearbox, I think it was about £1200 to repair. Warranty direct were very good and paid out no problem.
