With the problems my 1.6 has had recently, its time to get rid! Just been on Autotrader, and theres a very nice 1.8 2004 Stilo with 45k on the clock near me. Whats the general opinion on the 1.8??
They are a lot quicker of the mark than the JTD but the JTD is better on the motorway and on fuel.
To about 20mph perhaps.
No, quicker than a standard jtd an pure acceleration full stoprevving hard through the gears. Not quicker on in gear acceleration on motorway.

This variator problem...is it common on the 1.6 too? Mine is pretty noisy on startup but quiet and smooth once warmed up??
err it would have a job, it aint got one
only the 1.8 and the 2.4 have the variator (vvt)
the noise your hearing is quite common on the 1.6

how can you get 40+mpg? I'm doing 60mph on the motorway and can only just get 40. My daily commute is 20 miles down the M40 - apart from that I do a bit of town driving and average 32.6.

Not in my experience, not by a long chalk.
