1.8 gearbox replacement... possible to do yourself??

have just bought a reconed gearbox for my 1.8hlx mk2 because i've been told by a garage and can tell that mine is on it's way out... and unrepairable...

Anyone changed one of these themselves before? and if so did they need anything for it? apart from socket set and obvious stuff

also i think the box is off a 1999bravo is this a mk1? and will the gear ratios be diferent if so??

box will be the same. You'll need to remove the driveshafts in order to get it in. How do you know yours cant be reconditioned?

cool will i notice any difference in the gearing or not though?

an i kinda guessed that.. will i need any tools for it?? havn't removed driveshafts before... presume i need some kind of hoist to hold the gearbox in whilst taking off and putting on?...

when i took it in it was just after i bought the car and i thought it must be a dif seal or something like that then they said it wasn't worth repairing it because the casing had cracked and it was noisy in 4th... which it is... sounds like it's taking off!!

they quoted me about 700-800 quid to put it back right again and i managed to pick up this gearbox for 70quid with less miles than my engine and a recon with recipt 2000 miles ago off a 1999 car which i thought was really good

I had mine removed, reconditioned, and refitted with a new clutch at a local independent garage. Car was in for 6 days. Cost £700

yea thats about what they quoted me with a clutch kit a different re-coned gearbox and 5hours fitting... so i thought sod that! i paid less than that for the car... i'll do it for cheap with my dad lol but has anyone who's done it before got any tips? or anything that'll come in useful??
