i have a 1.4sx and was wondering if i should sell it now and get a 1.6 for near enough the same price. i just want a bit more boost!

i paid £3200 for a S reg bravo sx so:-

A) how much are 1.6 16v
B) Is the insurance a lot higher or just a bit
C) are they more poblematic, do more things go wrong with a 1.6 ??

cheers peoples

i have an s-plate 1.6, i'v been very happy. had it well over a year and nothing but a service so far!

I think most people say and of the engines are better than the 1.4, i think that was a bad nut!

Never driven a 1.4 so don't know about performance. if your going to change why not consider a 1.8, you get more toys and i'm sure there can't be that much in it cost wise!

have a look on autotrader

Re: Re: 1.4 to a 1.6 question......

i have a s plate 1.6 also never had any problems with out apart from normal wear and tear cambelts etc, was discussing this today at the NW meet, My car is standard no alloys or engine mods and i can quite happily beat my best mates Saxo VTR which has a stainless steel ex system and induction kit, annoys the tits of him!

Re: Re: Re: 1.4 to a 1.6 question......

i'm suprised you can beat a vtr, i thought they were about a second quicker to 60! never raced one but that does suprise me! Come on the fiats!

Re: Re: Re: 1.4 to a 1.6 question......

i cant believe ure 1.6 beats ure mates VTR, there must be summink seriously wrong wiv my 1.8 then coz my mates VTR kicks the arse off of mine.

This is y im sellin it for the HGT!!!

Re: Re: Re: Re: 1.4 to a 1.6 question......

cheers for the help fellas, i always use the autotrader website to see whats available, unfortunatly there isnt any 1.6's in my price range,

i couldnt really afford a 1.8 not due to buying one just in the long run eg, insurance, petrol etc, im only 19 ya see,

i might keep my 1.4sx for a few more months. ive only had it for about 3 months and love it to bits but like i sed i want a little more power so i think a 1.6 suits me,

also......this dredded cam belt problem......

the cars an (S)-reg its done 45,000 miles and its never had a cambelt change. what should i look out for if it starts going, so like what are the symtoms

cheers in advanced

Re: Re: Re: Re: 1.4 to a 1.6 question......

if the 1.6 beet a vtr, the person driving the VTR must have set off in 3rd gear lol

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 1.4 to a 1.6 question......

cambelts are a wired thing. No warnings, they will just go. suppose you could check it for obvious wear but i don't think that would help!

Problem with cambelts is some people have them go at 40k yet some people do over 100k and never have it changed.

Your in the same boat as me, mines a '98 and although its only done 31k i'm going to get it done soon as it's coming up to 5 years old. Atleast getting it done will give you peace of mind...

not to ruin that my mum had a colt gti, had it changed and it went with 1000 miles of having it changed. the engine rebuild was about £2500!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 1.4 to a 1.6 question......

I raced a VTR two days ago; the VTR won by just over a car's length over about ½mile. I have the TD100 (1.9) as well. :) Superchip here I come!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 1.4 to a 1.6 question......

Oh, and only three out of the four cylinders are firing properly :)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 1.4 to a 1.6 question......

I think quite a few people find the 1.6 slow cos they are afraid to drive it properly. You really do have to rev it to within an inch of its life to go anywhere quickly.

I think its the worst of the Fiats for flatspots, you can feel it kick in over 3500RPM. I think the earlier 1.6's were lower geared and the Mk1 is lighter than the Mk2. I love mine, just could do with a supercharger. :)

I had my cambelt done at 60k, looked just fine. ALL and I mean ALL cars with cambelts are subject to random failure, its not just Fiat. BMW, Audi, VW, you name it. There is no guarantee that a brand new one will last past the end of the road. You are better off with an old one than with a new one fitted by some numb-nut mechanic.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 1.4 to a 1.6 question......

The VTR Mk1 is a 1.6 engine putting out 100bhp as standard, the mk2 puts out 105bhp, as the bravo 1.6 is 103bhp and highly geared, (2nd gear goes to 60mph) and the vtr will only do 50mph thats when the lead begins then continues, we have also swopped cars and raced and still the bravo wins!!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 1.4 to a 1.6 question......

i'll have to try that some time!

The 1.6 bravo is definatley pants under 3500 rpm. Tom is right, you can really feel it when it kicks in! (almonst like a turbo. lol)

Mine goes flat about 5000 though, i think it needs an induction kit :)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 1.4 to a 1.6 question......

vtr's are 90bhp standard neither mk1 or 2 are over 100bhp, my g/f has one and its ****. proper plastic and tacky horrible little thing but it is nippy.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 1.4 to a 1.6 question......

are you sure its only 90bhp james? if so seeing as the vtr is a tuned hatchback, that is pathetic and must be the lowest in the 1.6 class, my mates log book clearly states its 100bhp, but maybe thats with his mods

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 1.4 to a 1.6 question......

yeah maybe the mk2 is 100 but its deffo not over my g/fs is rated at 90(mk1) its the size and weight of em that makes em fast ish. dont forget there still only single cam and get any power from being very revvy engines like the 106's. my old gti 106 16v was 120 i think and it was horrible. but was quite nippy but shitty golf gti's used to destroy me all the time. so i was glad i didnt have and 8 valve vtr or n e thing similar

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 1.4 to a 1.6 question......

Ah well i stand corrected then my mate!!

Still kicks the ass off him lol!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 1.4 to a 1.6 question......

think its cos the VTR is crappy 8v. Mk1 are definately 90bhp. fiat engines are just great! i used to have a 1.1 8v saxo - 60bhp! now i have a 1.2 16v brava - 82bhp! much better! and it does about the same mpg as the saxo!

My 1.6 humiliates bigger engines

Then how about my standard-ish 1.6 MK1 beating the Honda CRX Del Sol (with a standard 130bhp) by 4 cars length over a quarter mile?

Or maybe a 2-litre Alfa GTV?

Or maybe the 1.8 Citroen Furio?

Or maybe the Golf GTI (2litre)?

Or maybe the Hyundai Coupe 2litre?

Or maybe a 2litre Astra GSI?

Or maybe (the best of them all) the Bravo 1.8??

Oh yes it possible.

Re: My 1.6 humiliates bigger engines

The golf is easy, a 115BHP 8v engine.. nuff said.

The others.. hmmm... maybe they were busy eyeing your gf's tits :)
