Cat test said emisions are fine...Fiat computer test said engines fine.... why do I get 200 miles per full tank of petrol from this 1.4....Motorway driving I get about 320 which is what I should be getting for everyday use....Are these just rubbish cars or is something wrong?

This engine isn't brilliant for economy so there's probably not much wrong. If emissions and diagnostics are OK then that likely rules out problems that could cause poor fuel economy such as lambda sensor, exhaust problems or misfire. If it hasn't had one recently then a good service to clean everything out can do no harm :)

i know the 1.4s are bad engines but i dunno about fuel economy on them i know i get about 40-50 miles on 20 pounds but ive got a k&n cone on it which itsnt gonna help me have u got any perfomance mods also depends on how you drive

I dont think it should drop down to that level.
Question is, how many litres does it take to fill the car up when it does 200 miles ?

Just say it was filled up at 45 litres of 10 gallons, that works out an average of 20 miles per gallon. Thats well below the average for the 1.4

20mpg? My tipo gets better than that - even when thrashed! When driven carefully can get 38mpg. I think the 155 20v can get similar ecconomy.

Motorway I get about 310 - 330 but for round town about 200-230. I love my 1.4 but he's an expensive car to run!

:bang:

Forget that I hate the damned car now.

It started to have ignition probs, I changed spark plugs and HT leads, which made it a little less jumpy and bumpy. It has also got bottom end compression problems and the dip stick is being pushed out, and spurting oil over the engine. It's a very fun car to drive / well it was haven't used it for a few weeks and it's being part ex'd for an escort - my time with FIAT is well and truly over.

GF's head gasket blew for no apparent reason on her 2000 plate Punto
My MK1 punto was fun but costly to repair
My brava 1.4 12v gussles petrol too quickly and again everything seems over priced.
My Mums 02 Brava 80sx 1.2 engine is plenty fast enough nippy etc, but everything squeeks and rattles inside.

Bah to FIAT's (n)

Shame cos I love the engine noises they allways sound nice, and drive well. The biggest downer is that Fiat Brava's seem to be made to fit me like a glove. I dont fit in most small-ish family cars, due to my long legs :( but with the seat down as low as it goes and the wheel as high as it goes they are very comfy, and my nees aren't in the way all the time.

the 1.4 is known to use more petrol than the 1.6 or 1.8, and not just a little bit more either, which is bad when you consider the 1.6 and 1.8 already use more petrol than any other equivalent in their class. my 1.6 gets about 30mpg on average if im nice to it so you cant expect to get that much out of a 1.4. the 1.4 has a single injector which injects twice per cylinder per cycle. thats the most inefficient way of injecting petrol. petrol consumption was one of the main reasons they dropped the 1.4 for the 1.2. the 1.2 is faster and more efficient and more reliable. now you know why 1.4 bravos and bravas are worth a few hunderd quid.

eeeek!

Sounds like a problem I had.. Had to get my lambda changed, I was doing 70 miles motorway drivin to 3/4 of a tank.. Had the lambda changed and its all sorted, well I say sorted, im having an issue with top end speed, but im creating a new thread bout that..

Get the lambda changed out

tell me about it my 1.4 drinks it i wont a 1.6 but only been drivin 4 8weeks so its 2 much 2 insure 1

When i got a quote when i was looking at getting a bravo the quote for the 1.4 was more expensive then the 1.6

Like Helz has suggested get a 1.2 i cant stress enough that the 1.4 is a dog of an engine

Ive got a 1.4 12v Bravo and if you ask me they are a bag of S**t! 70 miles to a tenner wether i drive like an old man or a nutter! Top speed is a joke but i cant understand how anybody find the parts expensive.
Im hoping to change back to an audi again shortly, i prefer the bigger ,more responsive engines. If you think Fiat parts are expensive try a German car, youll understand then that Fiats parts are quite reasonable.:slayer:
