I might be wrong here (no, surely not) but I seem to remember there were questionmarks over the ability of the MJ gearbox to handle extra torque. I think it was a widely held belief that the MJ gearbox had essentially the same architecture as the other Panda 'boxes and that as the MJ was the torquiest there was insufficient "headroom" for more torque, although extra power wouln't be an issue.

It's been covered a few times before, but the same gearbox is used for all non-100HP, non-4x4 models. The gearbox itself is reasonably tough, but the clutch can't really handle more than 150nm of torque before it starts to wear prematurely and slip. Given that the MJ had to be detuned slightly for the Panda for exactly this reason it sits at 145nm, so there's not much more torque to get without beefing up the clutch.

The clutch/gearbox would be a concern if I chipped or upped the power by much. Also been looking at K&N air filter, but can't find a price?! Anybody else changed the air filter? What tyres would you guys recommend when they need replacing?

I've changed air filters on my previous diesels mainly because with high mileage it worked out more cost effective to clean them than replace with a paper element more frequently. In terms of performance I think you'd be hard pushed to tell any difference :D

Wrt tyres, I guess it comes down to what your priorities are - fuel economy, longevity, cost, ultimate grip (in dry/wet/snow/etc), cool tread pattern, etc. Of course everything will be a trade off, but it'll depend how much of a trade off you want :D
