Technical 1.2 sporting no drive

So I take my sons punto out today and it jumps out of second gear then it lost all drive , no gears when the clutch is realsed you just get a grinding noise. Also noticed on the tow home that it was make a grinding noise to . Any ideas what I can check. Thnx in advance Paul

these drop diffs so look for tell tale oil stains

is this 6spd box?

as SandB says look for loss of gear oil, you shouid smell it if so,

have you had any work done on driveshafts,

iseen one once with splines chewed up on drive shaft,
iguess thats pretty un-common for puntos tho so might have been a one off.

No we have had no work done , it did jump out of second about 2 months ago ?
And yes it is 6 speed ...

Ialways thought the 6-spd boxes where stronger,
there goes that thought,

sounds like your going to need a replacement box,
not seen many of these about tho,so im guessing they will be expensive,

It's the same as the 5 speed, just has an extra pair of cogs under the tin plate on the end. Should be plenty out there, just be a bit careful that you get one in good order.

So is that the only thing it can b is gearbox ?

Do check the driveshafts. But gearbox is the most likely cause.

Probable cause, abuse, low oil level.

My punto's gearbox have all failed in different ways

Diff explosion - and i mean exploded, a loud bang - fluid drops out and 1 wheel drive

The Rattly poor drive uptake - Wont take power, rattled and grinded like a bitch in lower gears, one day rev's shot up and it was toast
The gears had lost mesh and stripped, probably a worn bearing
Another was an abused box, no 3rd selection ability, it would grind badly, and the diff started going - clunka clunka clunka.... and that was quickly ripped out

Thnx people, not sure if we are going to repair it , it needs a wheel bearing on the rear and prob new rear shoes...apart ron that it's a nice car ..

Iwouid get a 2nd opinion on it,
to see if the problem is withing the box or not,
you never knows it might be saveable

it might work out cheaper fixing it rather than buying another car,
