Hi Guys

My 61 plate 1.2 Pop Stop Start won't start. It had been standing for a couple of weeks so I thought it was the battery. I've charged that up (don't worry, I put the negative clip on the stud where the black lead clips on and off to protect the stop/start mechanism) and this charged up just fine. The lights and all the electrics work seem to work OK.

All I get when I turn the key is a loud clicking. I'm assuming that's the solenoid. I tried rocking the car back and forth in top gear and trying again. No luck.

With the lights on, trying to start the engine dims the battery so I'm also assuming there's current flowing to the starter.

Any of you knowledgeable folk have any ideas before I call the Fiat dealer?

Thanks

J

Have you try to bump start it ?
Just might need a helping hand as its been standing

Thanks for the replies, I'm also thinking it's the battery. It hasn't really been holding charge lately and the car has been kept in a garage with long periods of not being used. It's a third car kept at our weekend home in the North Yorkshire Moors. I'll look into that as my first action.

Cheers

J

See link in punto EVO sticky they are the closest to OEM spec I found since exide supply fiat IIRC for the 500 you need the 60 ah one which is 3ah less than fitted but with a higher CCA I used just car batteries without major issue..... Be aware that a normal battery will not like the start stop system it isn't designed to take the cyclic high charge and discharge rates

:yeahthat:

And buy yourself a new battery. The one you have has most likely been damaged beyond repair by standing around unused for long periods.
A ctek should bring it back to life with a regen charge, our Legacy had been sitting for ages and the battery seemed dead, but the ctek did its thing and it came back to life

From experience the start stop batteries might seam to recover but they don't last long before the start stop starts playing up then the usual pas cutting out flashing mileage begins after the problems u had with my EVO been pre reg they had to jump it for the test drive I had it back to sort the s/s out and they charged it "with our special charger" I was always hooking my smart charger to it New battery on its been fine ever since

So what's the best battery for these? The local car accessory place offered me a Yuasa 202 battery for £50, insisting that it was the right battery for the car, but I have a feeling that the Start Stop mean the car will need a different, more expensive battery. Is this correct?

Thanks

J

Yeah, s&s is more expensive, personally I'd get a ctek charger and give that a go on a recon charge first.

This is the correct battery for S/S equipped cars. There's lots more useful info in that thread.

That £50 battery won't last five minutes under S/S charge/discharge cycling.

From memory, the Exide EL600 should do the job. £100-£130 depending on where you buy.

Cheaper on line http://www.justcarbatteries.co.uk/i...o-hybrid-ecm/exide-el600-096-ecm-battery.html

Before fitting it should be charged with a smart charger then left off charge for 2 hours before fitting to allow any surface charge to dissipate take the old battery off the car for one hour this way the start stop computer clears its memory and then learns to the healthy battery

Nice find. Cheapest I've seen it advertised.

If only dealers would follow this procedure on PDI, I'll bet at least three quarters of the posts on S/S problems would vanish overnight.

I ordered my replacement for my EVO from them. As you can probably tell been a Yorkshire man I like to shop about ;-)
