Hi,

Next weekend I'll be removing the engine out of my wife's Mk2 as it has cooked itself. I've got a replacement engine lined up - any tips/hints with regards to removal/refit?

Thanks in advance!

1 Simple advice
Weekend - Start very very very early!

Make sure you've got a decent engine hoist too!

My other advice is - its 10x easier if you drop the engine and gearbox together to the floor - then drag it from under car (on carpet or something)

You need a decent space to work - like a decent smooth drive garage, Street = BAD BAD IDEA

Ensure you keep bolts in an order you can remember - i mixed all mine up - that was somewhat fun figuring out which was which

If you can - give the Donor engine a good wash before, it makes for a tidyier job

A friend helps **** loads, and time + tea is your friend!

Hi worzel hope aunt sally is well?
anyway what is this talk of removing all drivetrain? they will tell you to cut the crossmember out next:D
support gearbox
crane on engine with rope so engine level
engine mount off
it comes out
sometimes fair enough it can be tight going in but it fits
a pry bar is sometimes needed to prod it down the inner wing
remember leave engine mount off till its in and on the box
6 hours work with plentty of tea

its not difficult:)

I hate to say this but ^^^^^ he is right, don't bother taking the gearbox and driveshafts etc etc out, I had it down in my Cinq (much tighter engine bay) that I could sawp the engine in a day, I did the swap from 1108cc>1242cc in about 7hrs, I just supported the gearbox, tip for you, raise the engine side of the gearbox up as it will make putting the engine back onto it a little easier.

When i did my engine swap i had a ceiling crane... so its movement wasn't the greatest
I also didnt have a balancer, as i removed engine mount, and started to lift, it slopped and got stuck at an angle, this made it very very hard to get out, but its doable by removing the engine mount and getting it out

If i did what i'm doing again, then i'd be dropping whole lot to floor,

But do make sure you get clutch aligned up upon fitting it - as it makes it alot easier to get in and out

idont bother with lifting gear,

all you need is a few rag puddings night before, and help from one of your mates who aint scared of getting oily hands, and hand ball the thing in,

.....oops. health and safety will be out,

you must use..safety boots, tin hat engine lift, etc these days, :D

we used to use a scaffold pole and rope :D
cant beat an injun lifter though;)
why
because you can stop and drink
tee a(y)

I will be honest, when I did the swap on my cinq I lifted it out by hand on my own lol, Grrrrrr Geordie power!!!!! I wouldn't however recommend this as I then spent 3 days in bed lol. if you have an engine lift then use one, don't try to be a hero and lift it like I did lol.

we used to spend a full day fitting pinto engine's.
finding a good one in scrapyard was hard, (gamble's)

all hand balled in, :D no tin hats

had same fun with K-series engines last year, number 3 was a winner, :)

HEY I loved the early Shuvitts, they were great but you couldnt take them out after dark in the snow, the recessed headlights used to fill up with snow and you could see bugger all and the frog eye modification looked terrible

datsun 120y
fitted 3 gearboxes in it before i got one that had reverse
all scrapyard ones
i got the opinion in the end this is why the cars were scrapped in the first place rather than rust killing them
other problem was all my tackle was af and these used metric fittings

Thanks for all the advice - all out or just the engine was one of the things I've been pondering! Luckily, we'll have a workshop and hoist so I'm sure that will help matters!

Will definitely be doing timing belt and water pump before fitting the replacement engine, the clutch is pretty new so that will transfer over.

Is their wisdom to replacing the radiator after a history of head gasket fails on the car? Its done 127,000 miles so perhaps would benefit from it?

I'm off for a nice cup of tea and a slice of cake with Aunt Sally and the Crowman!

ive had a thought
when fitting new engine give it a thermostat as most h/g failures are due to these staying shut and cooking engine its a punto trait i find

love to aunt sally as always
