Good news for 2012 Fiat 500 owners. I was told that I needed to replace the entire hatch handle when license tag light burned out. Those jokers cost around 350.00... Apparently that is not the case. I bought my 500 in March 2012. The December 2012 500 may be another story.
The lights burned out because of a design flaw. I heard that a revision was done in March 2012! I did some digging on 500 forums and found part numbers for said tag lights. Bought the right side LED for 27.00! Here is the thing, the original wire harness has a square head with tab for sliding onto bulb. This locks it in place. The new replacement LED lamp has a round piece. The two male connectors are the same. All you need to do is grab a knife, shave off tab on wire harness and presto! The square wire harness head fits inside round piece. Turn on lights and you have a new LED! Seems way brighter too! maybe this is part that comes on 2013 500, who cares.....Modify and it works! Hope this helps.
Anyone in the Richmond Va area with this problem see parts guy at Whitten Bros. Tracy in the service dept knows as well that this will work on your car.
