I'm pretty clueless when it comes to oil, just go with whatever the manual says and be done with it. However, the Pajero is a whole different kettle of fish.
I didn't get a manual with it and - being a Japanese import - even if it had come with a manual I doubt I'd have understood very much of it! I found one Japanese message board which - when translated with Google - seemed to suggest that 10w30 (fully synth) is the correct grade of oil, great - or so I thought. Turns out that most places don't stock 10w30, and those that do it's hella expensive and labelled as for race-spec motorbikes!
So my questions is, could I use 10w40 or 5w30 instead?
Cheers!

What you really need to do is get yourself onto an oil site on the web. All will be revealed....Can't do links but ,...... Google...truths & myths about engine oil will be enough information for the novice.

I would be inclined to go for a 5w30 but its your car so you need to be happy with that.

Castrol magnatec comes in this spec formulated for Ford Zetec engines with hydraulic tappets.

if you took it to a garage to be serviced they have a horrible habit of just throwing what ever they have in.

One could contact opieoils.co.uk. Tim contributes on different forums and gives advice.
Since your car is an 'older' one, a mid-SAPS oil may not be needed like the ones specified for the 'newer' Fiat range i.e. ACEA C2 & ACEA C3. You may be able to use a different spec e.g. ACEA B4 (see if you can find that out), which will give you a better choice of oils. The premium oils recommended by Opie would be Fuchs / Silkolene ProS, Millers CFS, Motul 300V, Redline & Gulf competition. The Redline oil in particular lists a range of viscosities (including the 10w30) and their site lists the differences in them. Engine wear is also a factor in the choice of oil with some individuals opting for a slightly thicker viscosity. So if e.g. you used 5w30 or a 5w40 the latter runs a little thicker at higher temperatures and might be better for a turbo charged car. There is a thread on the FF from the OILMAN that would be worth a read. Would be very interested in what you end up getting as a recommendation and what you end up using.

One that is not sold by Opie (worth googling to see what’s said about it)

2002 is considered older now?! I suppose it is almost 10 years old, but I wouldn't have said it was that old :(

I'll try and read through those links at some point soon, the Pajero is coming off the road next week when I get the Seicento re-taxed, etc so no rush for it :) Much appreciated!

Congratulations on becoming a Moderator Eklipze3k. Only just noticed the colour change.(y)

I hope you don't mind if I leverage off your thread for a bit - I have an interest in using a better oil than the recommended Selenia oil and hestitant about creating a new thread. Hopefully it will be a 'win win'.

I also remember the 660cc turbo engine from the Suzuki Cappuccino from a 'drive' in a neighour's car (I had the MX5 a the time) and it was a little cracker of an engine despite only returning a reputed 35mpg at the pumps.

Checking the properties of the different viscosities if 10W30 is coming up as the recommended viscosity from your research I didn't see the 'right one' in a 5W30 or 5W40 and it might be best to stick with the 10W30.

There is plenty of choice on here with a 'cheapie' mineral and then choices of Fully synthetic of Ester synthetic. From the bit of reading that I did the Ester has the scare factor of 'swelling seals' but the actual Ester content (the expensive bit) is really only 20-25%. The PAO is Class IV whilst the Ester is Class V. A high quality mineral oil is deemed to be Class III and is 'not really at the races'. Discussion on which is best - PAO or Ester is discussed here with Ester coming out on top.

On the Red line choices with Opie there is a Racing oil. Get the impression that this would not give the protection and for a daily car the RL HP syn would be the better choice plus it's the only one categorised as Ester.
There is a Royal Purple on ebay for £11.56 (another Ester) for a quart (0.95L) which if you remember from the scar test it got an excellent result of practically no wear.

Plenty of threads over the pond of Amsoil vs. Royal Purple vs. Red Line and which is the best. On the four ball tests which are not offically recognised Amsoil which has not got API certification (not all that important) flaunt that theirs is the best oil.

There is another nice summary on one of the reviews...

but the advice is not to pay over the odds for oil and wait for it to come up on special. Filter is also important with the good ones filtering at 5 microsomething.

Can't really advise as to which make is best and which is 'value for money' but it could come down to the Redline HP & Colour Purple for the Esters and Amsoil for the Fully synthetic (FAO) or the 'cope out' Motul mineral. You would need to check with someone who genuinely knows what they're talking about if these are suitable or not.

I ran Mobile 1 on a turbo charged CVH Escort and at 70K miles the turbo needed a re-build and the gearbox was done twice ; 'chipped' engine has also lost its 'edge'. Getting robbed and living life in the fast lane didn't do it any favours. At the time the oil was supposedly the best around but it would not 'cut the mustard' today. Get the impression that the M1 started cutting corners using the cheaper Class III base oils when originally it was in the IV category.

Hopefully others will throw in their twopence worth but at least you're armed with a bit of info if you go asking any questions.;)

if there was a turbo in that model i would use a 5w-30 fe grade oil,oil moves quicker when thin.
