Hi All,

I have changed the cams in my car and added adjustable timing wheels. After assembling everything and taking the car for a spin around the block, I noticed that the cam belt is riding on the forward edge of the wheels. I know they like to find their home, but is this OK. On the inlet wheel its just over the edge by about 1/32"

Hi, Welcome to the FF.

The belt should not be "overhanging" either of the sprockets. The retaining lips on the front of the exhaust, and rear of the inlet cam sprockets should hold the belt completely on the sprocket teeth.

Your sprockets are not aligned correctly.
 
These cam wheels ran true before I changed the cams. I do have shims that fit under the cam wheel, but have not used them and the cams sit firm on the shaft.

However, on a spare engine, I noticed when I sit the cam box on the head with the bolts finger tight. The cam box can move a little. ie I can move the back of the box toward the exhaust and front of the box toward the plugs. This would offer a small varitation to the relationship with the idler and inlet cam wheel.

When you speak of alignment, I was assuming the relationship between the two cam wheels. ie, are they running true with each other.

On another forum, someone has indicated that they wheels may be worn, or the idler pully is worn (3k miles old).

I'll need to continue to investigae.
