Hi there! Sorry everyone if I keep starting new threads, but I can't seem to find the info I'm looking for.

I heard on the grape vine that if you install a induction kit you will get a few more BHP, however it causes your motor to use a lot more fuel and possibly burn the engine valves out quicker. Does anyone know if this is true?

Also, does anyone know how good those service repair cd's people sell on ebay are?

Thanks :slayer:

What rubbish.......................

don't worry, stick your K &N on and chill out, you don't gain any bhp although they claim you gain 3-5bhp, I think it just improved acceleration, but then it would do as you are ramming more air into your engine!

MPG, crap before and crap after, I've always averaged 23-28mpg.

You want one of those discs, I'll sort you one, just PM me your postal address!

Re: Induction kits

K&N kits are great - won't damage your engine at all - MPG neither up nor down, in my experience....Sounds great, oh and improved throttle response ...which in all Stilos is pretty damn sharp...go ahead enjoy

Re: Induction kits

Does it not make the engine burn a little bit leaner due the extra air getting in, therefore making the enigne burn slightly hotter?

Re: Err.......................

Only real benefit of a K&N is you won't need to replace it, ever! Only real benefit, unless you want your car to be more noisy!

I've got one of these on my mini, yeah it sounds nice, but in the scale of things it probably does nothing. You'd only get a perfomance gain if your old filter was clagged and failing.

Re: Induction kits

Most modern car intake tracks are more or less maxed out at peak power anyway. The benefit of a induction kit is you are potentially unrestricting the ability to get to more air more quickly - hence throttle response.

Id be surprised if you got much air extra. If you did see any more BHP this is mostly due to cars and conditions not being constant.
The air going in is under atmospheric pressure and so wont suddenly go any quicker than this. (unless you fit a turbo or supercharger for Forced induction!)

Basically speed costs money and its a question of how much you want Vs how much you are willing to spend. On the whole (there must be some exceptions) extra performance only comes with engineering and investment.

That said - I always fit a K&N, as I like the sound and the perceived throttle response. ;)

On some cars changing the intake tract can be negative. I know on my other car, members of the club had a loss in torque as the tract was now shorter and didnt have the air box and some sort of resonance wave was bouncing back or something! :(
Basically it was designed that way for a reason.

Proper Cold Air Induction kits (usuing the ram effect from the front of the car) are often a good thing. Cold air is denser so the charge you get is more usefull, so with petrol achieves a more optimum use of the combustion stroke. They often have a reasonable length to the intake tract.

my 2p worth. ;)

Re: which air induction kit

Ive got nothing against induction kits but have been thinking :chin: If the standard airbox has been put in the right place by the manufacturer, it wont be by accident. Meaning its the best place for it- away from all the engine heat off manifolds etc. So would a better panel filter from Green/BMC/K&N and (somehow) a bigger air intake be better/cheaper? Also might not affect the warranty......

The 1.2 16v and the 1.4 16v need a fairly long hose in order to have a good torque output. This is the only reason that the F10i induction kit was a major contribution to a 102lbf ft fitted to a 1.2 16v (measurements taken on reference RR). There was a reason to have a siliconhose length of over 1.2 metres.

Also the hose used in your application encourages turbulences, which results in a lower volumetric efficiency.

Just have last Friday tested the new induction hose on a 147GTA with a twin cone steel mesh filter element (which is not the best flowing filter) having peak power increased by 12.8bhp. This week we will test it with some more filters (none of them will be foam filters because they do not flow enough air) and a totally revised airbox. Will keep you updated.

Induction Kit Videos

Hi, I'm fairly new on here as I've only had my 1.8 stilo since the end of Jan but would firstly like to say thanks to all the helpful advice everyone has provided on past threads. It's cool to see such a good following considering how many you actually see on the roads, especially performance ones, so cheers for that.
Anyway, I'm looking to buy an induction kit! As I'm sure many of you have in the past as one of your first mods but having looked at many of the past posts am still dubious as to which route to go. I saw the pipercross thread including the videos which sounded so good, hats off to "stilosport" there, and the threads advising the bmc far over the K & N but doing a bit of research, i can get the K & N for £70 delivered, but the bmc for £150 delivered. Now to be honest, after looking around the engine bay, i don't think "home mods" such as air box holes are really the way for the stilo although i have seen very positive effects on other cars. But also I can see that the heat from the engine is going sap power from the K & N unless perhaps a better heat sheild is installed also? I wondered if anyone had already done this? I've read that the K & N sounds really good however and is half the price. The BMC it seems to me is goin to be a better power gain but at double the cost? Also i've never heard one so don't know if it'll give me the growl i'm after. I was just wondering if anyone had any videos of their bmc, K & N, or any other induction kits other than the pipercross one from the other thread that they could post up? It would be much appreciated as would any other useful information or advice anyone might have.

Cheers

Re: Induction Kit Videos

I dont have any videos but can tell you i installed a universal air filter with a cold air intake in my stilo, it gets a lovely growl out of it. All you need to do is take off the huge airbox (3 botls) but you will need a small oil breather filter too to do it properly. All the pipes etc are pretty self explanatory once the big box is out.

Re: Induction Kit Videos

Have you had much of a power increase with your universal one Ian and was it a pain to fit? Also where are you feeding your cold air from as the engine bay is quite sheltered and sources of heat are abundant to say the least! I looked at maybe finding some way of cutting the small sealed plastic bay directly in front of the air intake. With this out of the way, air could enter straight through the grill but i was thinking fiat must have designed it this way for a reason? Does anyone know why? I've seen a few modded stilo's with a pipe straight through the grill which seems logical but I'd prefer to keep it looking fairly subtle ;) Has anyone drilled the plastic or got rid of it before? If so any tips?

Re: Induction Kit Videos

i got me a K&N induction kit.. it was a pain in the ass to fit, doesn't give much performance upgrade.. but boy does it sound nice.
