What causes warped discs?

I've had my front discs replaced because they were warped but I was wondering what causes it?

Dan

Cool Re: What causes warped discs?

Re: What causes warped discs?

Also sitting on your brakes whilst stationary at traffic lights could cause excess heat on one part of the disc, which therefore warps....[plus of course blinding the geezer behind].

Re: What causes warped discs?

The disks had 44k on them, and I am quite heavy footed. I used to have a punto with brakes that felt like sponge and it took me while to get used to the stilos front and rear disc brakes

Re: What causes warped discs?

Just checked mine this morning, they are not warped but i reckon when the pads go next time, the discs will need doing. Possibly not going to be fiat items, might change them to something else- dont know yet.

The pads i have got on at the moment are cheap ones but the work just as good, unless you drive like a joyrider for about 30 mins and the fade is terrorfying!

But that said for everday driving and motorway use, no fade yet!

Reason I had the wheels off this morning was a perminant squeal on the front wheels not changing with breaking, wasnt the bearings but i think the metal plate thing behind the disc was touching something as it pushing that back a bit seemed to have cured it. also a quick bang on the back of the pads to remove crud as well made it better!

Me too, they were already fitted when I got the car so I can't compare them to the standard items but they certainly do the job and looking on the EBC website not too pricey.

Plus you can hear them going shooooooosh when you've got the window open

Re: What causes warped discs?

I saw on a website somewhere that in most cases 'warped discs' are actually not warped but have a buildup of brake material caused usually by the pads being held against the disc while hot i.e the pad material to binding to the disc.

Can't find the site at the moment though.

That would make interesting reading Rob if you COULD dig that out its always handy to have those little bits of extra information of course in the garages they check for run out with a dial gauge to see if theres any distortion but it makes me wonder if this is correct Re- brake material on discs how many actually in that case do need replacing <--- Stu's favourite smiley
