Noticed today everytime I select first from a standing start I get a clunk noise. Nothing different in actual driving terms or smoothness of gears but I'm sure it never used to do it. Can't be heard with stereo on....any ideas is it because its gone cold out there?

Thanks

no idea, I can only think that bushes on the linkage may be responsible, is it Selespeed or propper manual?

Mines also a bit harder when it's stone cold... shouldn't think it's anything to worry about... Does it also do it when it's warmed up??? If so maybe it does need looking at

The clunk is only when selecting 1st, no other gears and I have noticed if I put the clutch down to the floor, it is a lot less of a clunk. Still did it after an hours drive today. But as I said above no actual effect on the gear change smoothness, just the clunk!

Not something I reckon a dealer would investigate too far and not worth risking them looking at when it drives fine currently or do you disagree?

Does anyone esle hear a noise, slight clunk when selecting 1st gear, as its still doing it.

My Dad said to stop worrying about it as you'll always here the 'mechanics' of the gear selection going on, its not quite! He drives an Astra!

No funny noises on mine though it is slightly "harder" to change gear while it's cold (feels a bit notchier) but soon smooths out when the engine warms up.

What's wrong with an Astra? I've got 2 of them!

Mines just a small clunk noise when going into 1st, seems more apparent once engine warmed up, not when cold.

But the actual selecting of the gears is very smooth, the smoothest I've ever driven. Its just the noise you get, suppose its meant to be there and my hearings too sensitive! Can't be heard with stereo on.

My stilo gives out a good thunk when 1st gear is initiated. I always pictured it as the gear train meshing together as if they were all a bit loose (poor manufacturing tolerances hehe). I really only first noticed it when my father was taking my car out the driveway. I was like WTF calm down with my new car! Only to realise that it does it all the time, and is very noticeable from outside the car.

Perhaps slightly related I'm starting to have problems with the gear shifter. Recently it has had phases of extreme stickyness when moving across the gears. Best way to describe it is that if you waggle the lever in neutral, it is very tough, and rough feeling. Going from 2nd, to 3rd requires 3 movements, up, across up, rather that an almost straight push. Then the next time I'm in the car, its as free as ever. Makes no sense what so ever. Taking it to the garage is a major pain. I'm never out the place. :( I want to curl up in the fetal position and hide thinking about what could be on the horizon...

euan went and test drove a multiwagon today, did the same noise! Asked the tech he said some gear boxes are louder than others, but he said there was nothing wrong with the multi one, so i think I'll stop worrying about a little clunk for now!

Hey that's nice to know. I'll rank mine amongst the top then. ;)
