hi guys, first time on ff. 2004 stilo 1.4 active.
wonder if anyone can help, get the error message "loose connection" on startup. the abs light, handbrake light, oil light are all on, the rev counter and speedo don't work nor does the oil temp gauge? the digital display and fuel gauge are ok, the car also drives ok but is a bit lumpy at low revs.
any ideas?

disconnect the battery, then re-connect, I had this issue where I had even more powerful steering (never used city mode) and no speedo

i would say you need a new battery i had the same probs with both of are stilos last year2 new bats and perfict again make sure you get one with at least 65 amps or moore serch some of the treads about batterys on here

thanks for that fender mender, i'll try that tomorrow. i'll let you know if it works or not.

I know by experience that if crankshaft sensor is not working for sure you will have "Loose connection" error on the dashboard and the rev counter will not work. But If you have so many lights on try searching the problem in the electical system first . Maybe the other guys could help by pointing which connectors to clean because there might be a bad contact somewhere.

No crank shaft possition sensor working would mean the car won't run normally.

OP have you had any fault codes read

In my case I tried changing the crankshaft sensor and the new one was not working (returned it to the shop). When it was not working I had the loose conection error and not working rev counter.
Whit the faulty sensor the started hard and with strange noises but once started ran perfectly!
There were fault codes in the computer but dont remember them all. :)

tried the brand new battery but alas that didn't work either. still got the loose connection message, loads of lights on and no rev counter or speedo! anyone out there with any other suggestions? (by the way the engine management light is not on, and when the auto electrician plugged his magic box in, he said there is no problem)???

all earth strap connections clean as whistle, what's next off the checklist? had the brakes checked out, all the connections for the abs are ok. new disks and pads only 3 months ago. ( feel like hitting it with a branch, like john cleese did in fawlty towers).

This thread sounds similar to what you're experiencing:

https://www.fiatforum.com/stilo/259618-stilo-dash-instrument-cluster-probs.html

It doesn't have that much to go by but above the other suggestions that have been made, deckchair5 mentions checking fuses F37 and F53 in the fusebox in the pull down compartment in front of the drivers right knee (RHD).

Hopefully that solves your problems (y)

Hi mark, checked out fuses F37 and F53, both ok. cluster earth point ok.
In the thread it did mention the two plug in connecters at the back of the cluster, when i removed mine there is only one connecter, with only one set of pins to connect to?

This sounds very similar to the issue I'm having with my 2006 JTD Stilo. I think it is probably going to be the instrument cluster at fault but I don't really want to buy one and find that I'm wrong. Have you had the fault codes read yet or tried a Proxi Alignment?
Mick

hi mick, there are no fault codes? and i don't know what a Proxi Alignment is, got in touch with a fiat dealership last week, to buy a new cluster, they quoted me £618.43 inc vat! i know there are various outfits out there that specialize in reconditioning your own cluster, but, i need to eliminate all other possibilities before i dive into that scenario. anyone on the FF know a decent mechanic in the south manchester area? one that could determine the problem without forking out for things that i don't need?
getting desperate now guys, please help.

when you want to have your cluster repaired i can do that for you for a competative price, please PM me when you want more info...
I already helped other forum members and they are happy with the repair.

Hey if you need a new cluster/or thinking or repairing - I used these guys last year when the dials on my cluster stopped working.

Cluster repairs uk. Check em out

Excellant service Cant fault them..think i paid between 120-150 to get it repaired inc deliveries comes with warranty too & they dont charge that much for a brand new one (under 200) if i can recall.

I'm not far from South Manchester. I'm about 10 minutes from junction 17 on the M6. I have the software to do the proxi alignment and I have a spare JTD cluster that we could try to verify if it's the cluster. If you fancy a run out at some point give me a shout.
Mick

I've just had exactly the same happen today on my '52 JTD. Did you manage to fix the problem with a new cluster or in any other way?
