This is a rather weird one, and cannot find anything similar to this on the forum.

Basically whenever I hit around 3000rpm the engine makes this really loud noise as if a rush of air is escaping. This goes away as soon as I change into a higher gear and has now happened 5 times in the space of three weeks.

I will add that the head gasket has recently been done too.

Oh, and it's pretty hard to get a recording of the sound as it happens at random intervals and I do not know it's going to happen.

I have a 1.6 Stilo, and therefore no turbo.

From the video the user posted, the sound isn't like that at all, but I will check the pipes.

Have you checked for any loose metalwork like the exhaust heatshields that might be rattling when the engine reaches a harmonic at those revs?

If you look under the bonnet you will see various bits of the exhaust system shrouded in what looks like rigid tin foil. There are further bits of this under the car, acting as a heat shield to keep heat from the exhaust from entering the bodyshell. Sometimes these can work loose...
