A few months ago a friend of mine had the idea to install lights into the front bumper of his Stilo.

We made a prototype and we were pleased with it so we improved a few things, made a better one and fitted it to his car, which he has since crashed. So I recently purchased all his spare parts including the prototype and here it is fitted to my car.

Neat (y)

As you have installed these lights on your upper part of your M/W front bumper you could install some fog lights on your lower section part of the bumper aligned below your headlights to give it an even more diverse effect.

Possibly not on a JTD with an intercooler, I doubt there's enough space there. If there is enough space, the near-side lamp is likely to interfere with the airflow to the intercooler.

There's plenty of space but airflow through the intercooler rad would be restricted.

There's 2 intercoolers on the JTD.
The second that most people dont know about is part of the EGR system, cools the hot exhaust gases before they enter the inlet manifold. Do both intercoolers use the same rad below the nearside headlight?

they look a damn sight more professional than mine, but ill bet a pretty penny mine are brighter ;) (pictures will follow).

There isnt really space behind the lower L & R grills, i had to cut away plastic on the N/S and bend the horn out of the way on the O/S to give mine clearance, now i'm just trying to figure out how to alter the grills to incorporate my new lights...saying that i did fit 8" long tube lights in mine not the same thing that shadey fitted, so there probably is just about enough space....are those lenses glass?

I admit, installing 2 extra lights in the lower grills would look pretty cool but the lower part of the bumper isn't rigid enough IMO.

I did a test last night by clamping on 2 spotlights to the lower grills of the bumper and taking a drive down a few dark country lanes. The beam was vibrating all over the place. The lower bumper only moves slightly but when the beam extends 50 or 60 meters infront of the car that slight movement is accentuated and I find it anoying. Unless I can find a way of fixing the spotlights direct to the chassi some how, lights in the lower grills is a no go for me. :(

c'mon, thats not the shadey we normally see on here ;)

take a look at this for inspiration (it IS possible):

How are they mounted, from the Bumper Reinforcement ??

Obviously not direct to the bumper like I had planned to do.

Any chance of a few close ups of how they're mounted?

Edit.
Forgot to say, the look really good. Nice job ... (y)

Spent this morning altering how the lights are switched on and off.

To comply with the law the lights had to be switched on and off at the same time as the High Beam or controlled seperately via their own switch.

Originally when I turned on the high beam they came on. But, I wanted to be able to switch them on and off independently. This idea grew into something abit more complicated.

I'm now able to select which lights I want them to be controlled by.

Now via a selector knob I able to select for them to be controlled by side lights, low beam, high beam or on their own.

Installed it all into that useless little hole in the dash to the left of the steering wheel(right hand drive).

i had originally planned to drop a few bars form the bumper reinforcement, and mount them off of there, but this proved not feasible due to the geometry of the "space" behind the lower part of the bumper, the bumper and the reinforcement.

So what i did was bent the horn up and out the way on the O/S and on the N/S cut away a plastic strap creating gaps on either side. then i got some 3mm thick 2cm wide aluminium strips and bent it to shape so that on each side of the light there is an alu strip, both of the alu strips (one on each side of each light) meet at the top and the bottom and are bolted to the plastic "front end" via common bolt, then i riveted the lights to the alu strips...

I have my "switchgear" in exactly the same place (y)

mine are fully independent, on-off, low-high....

well at least until i can get my head around this computer controlled relay board, then no switches :D

Any chance of a few photo's?

I have the feeling a "plan" is about to be hatched. (y)

Again, any chance of a few photo's of the install?

And whats this computer controlled relay board, you car PC will be able to controll the switching?
