Casting pumps aside for a minute. Ill be sure to get back to that after my little panic. Im having fun and games with this bloody Alt belt.

The only thing i can get at short notice and the only one all motor factors list is Belt 4PK668.
My old one that came off the car is 4 K663

Is this going to be a major issue in the short term? Surely they wouldnt recommend one that wont work at all.

I believe the alternator to compressor belt is an elasticated belt ?

The part number (4PK668) indicates it has 4 ribs and is 668mm long at rest. Your old one would be 663mm so 5mm shorter.

Has it ever been replaced before? Perhaps 663mm is too short putting too much tension on the A/c pulley and causing the bearing wear.

That has always been on the back of my mind but when i rang fiat they had a totally odd part number that i couldnt tell anything from. Ill give them a ring again just to check.

Thanks

Stu

Hi, the part number for the belt you require is 46758804 . This is a stretch belt, only obtainable from a fiat main dealer parts department. The size you gave is correct, before the belt is stretched . Be careful with your fingers trying to pull and turn the belt on, its tight. I made my own tool out of an old 24 mm. socket and spanner to fit the belt, over the air con pulley and alternator pulley.

Haha I was gonna say that.

I just re read through the thread and I missed a question davren. Both of the pulleys on the compressor are loose. It can't be acceptable as it's making an awful noise and chewing belts.
I'm told it could be mended but with the offers I've had for units their is no point in risking paying somebody to attempt and fail.

The belt I got was totally wrong. It was looser than a ho's chuff so alt belt is back to the frayed one for now.

So do we think it's possible for me and a friend who is much more mechanically minded than myself to replace the air compressor unit?

I almost send cam belt and water pump but I'll get a pic up at some point. It looks like the car has already had cam work so inevitably a new belt but I need some opinions.

If it's making a noise when spinning the pulley then the bearing is definitely gone. If you can get a compressor cheap enough, that would be the way to go rather than risk dismantling to fit a bearing and pulley if they are available.

Main problem with getting the compressor out is probably going to be access. I've never worked on a 2.4 engine but there's not much space around my JTD compressor, it's going to be even less with your 5 cylinder engine.

We have a pc at work now so hopefully eper will work. (never got it to on any of my macs).
Can anybody else think of anywhere a break down of how the unit comes off?

So here is the cam belt area. Is it right for the pulleys to be different colours or does this look like its recently had work? The belt looks almost new but im no expert.

Think you may be confusing ePER with eLEARN. ePER is the parts catalogue, eLEARN is the workshop manual.

eLEARN is not like a Haynes manual that gives step by step instructions for DIYers. It's aimed more at the trade so doesn't always show every nut and bolt that needs to be removed.

Because you need to de-gas the system before removing, and re-gas it after refitting the compressor, it may be better to get an A/c specialist to fit it. (Bear in mind it's illegal to vent A/c gas to atmosphere)

The eLEARN procedure for removing the compressor is:
  • Remove the engine cover.
  • De-gas the system.
  • Remove the right front wheel, wheel arch liner and engine under-tray (horizontal and right hand parts).
  • Remove the auxilliary and alternator belts.
  • Disconnect the compessor wiring plug.
  • Remove the "tandem" A/c pipes (I suspect tandem means the two pipes are fitted to a single mounting plate, so come off together)
  • Unbolt and remove the compressor from under the car. (Noting the position of the spacer(s) on the bolt(s))
  • Refitting is a reverse of the above using new seals for the tandem pipes, then re-gas the system.
There's also a warning note to ensure the alternator cable isn't touching the manifold or cat' once the compressor is refitted.

From the general look of it, it doesn't look as though it's had any work done for a while.

Different colour pulleys isn't an issue, they're probably made for Fiat by different manufacturers.

What could be an issue is the line that appears to be scribbed all around the outside face of the timing belt. Looks as though it could be touching something. There also appears to be signs of something (possibly grease) coming from the centre of the water pump pulley.

Do you know when the timing belt was last replaced?

Crikey Dav, you've got good eyesight! I'd say those lines on the outside of the belt are normal and have probably been scribed by one of the pulleys (water pump?) and the 'grease' marks on the wp pulley look very old and (in my humble opinion) nothing to worry about.

Well that isnt the most clear instructions in the world but im dure we could make do. I spose i could check an air con specialist and see how much they would charge.

As for the Belt I think thats just the excentuation of my phones camera.
